36 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, КВІТЕНЬ 2009 Recession - Proofing Your Health and Well - Being by Ihor Magun, M.D., F.A.C.P. The economic crisis has affected us all, and the uncertainty of global monetary issues are likely to continue for some time. All of us are concerned by this state of affairs, and especially how it is likely to affect our own assets and lifestyles. The concern leads to stress and anxiety, which affect our most precious asset and commodity — our own health and the health and well - being of those dear to us. Chronic stressful situations increase the risk of illness, wreak havoc on the immune system, and make us more suscept ible to everything from allergies to cancer. The crux of the problem is finding a way to de - stress. The first step is to identify the things that are most stressful to you and create a logical plan to tackle them. Enlist family members to help and share id eas and concerns with them. Get pro - fessional help or advice for those issues that may require professional intervention and can only be solved by an expert. Learn a new way of relaxing without much monetary expenditures. A bubble bath or a relaxing showe r with scented soap costs very little but are a good way to decompress. Have your spouse give you a massage. It’s a good way to relax and it might even rekindle romantic moments that help both of you enjoy your new de - stressing program even more. Now that the weather is warmer and the days are longer, take a brisk walk outside. A walk in fresh air can clear your mind and give you an energy boost. It’s good exercise and it’s free and is another good way to fight stress - related fatigue and illness. Accentuat e all the positive things in your life. In fact, write them down. You will be amazed how many good, basic things you might be taking for granted, and most of the things on your list will be much more important than dollars and cents. Spend more time in th e kitchen with your family or with friends. Cooking dinner (even if only on a weekend) can bring you closer together. Home cooking is always healthier and better than purchased food, and you can make it even better by starting that healthier outlook on lif e with less salt, more fruits and vegetables. Make time with older family members. They have an insight on life that may be different from yours but what you learn will frequently be quite interesting and filled with a unique history. Put together a family tree with photos. This a project that brings people together and creates a fascinating heirloom for generations to come. Don't forget to visit elderly friends who may not be as lucky as you are and may have no close family members. You’ll be surprised how much joy this visit brings to others as well as to you. Volunteer. You will discover that sharing your skills, your knowledge, and your own two hands to help others contributes to your own well - being and confirms the best in human nature. Pursue a hobby t hat you always wanted to fulfill. Sew, learn a new language, write a poem (or even a book). All great works start with a dream. Dream big! Revisit your own spirituality. Spiritual intro spection can be a great de - stressor and can provide more power and str ength than you might imagine. All of us have heard the famous saying "As one door closes another door opens." Perhaps the current economic situation is one of those doors. Open it with an open mind and what you fin d may surprise and delight you.
