“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, КВІТЕНЬ 2009 31 Transportation away from The Hill. Helena Zyblikewycz kayaking in Fiji. Foreign Service from Georgetown University and a Masters in Public Policy from the University of California at Berkeley. As a high school student, she earned a scholarship to study in Japan for a year. As a university student she took courses at Kyiv’s Mohyla Academy an d the London School of Economics. She was also the first intern sponsored by The Washington Group to work at the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington, DC. While in graduate school, Ms. Zyblikewycz received a fellowship from the Institute for Labor and Employme nt Studies to work with the California Federation of Labor on a research project on expanding the living wage to all California state workers and contractors. Ms. Zyblikewycz has also worked as an analyst with the Committee for Economic Development, a publ ic policy think tank, and has public policy consulting experience on a range of issues. Immediately prior to coming to Capitol Hill , she spent three years as a Legislative Representative with the Transportation Trades Department, AFL - CIO (TTD), a Washingto n, DC - based labor organization where she advanced a broad legislative and regulatory agenda which in - cluded maritime issues, surface transportation safety, and security policies. Throughout our conversation, this writer was particularly impressed by two q ualities that Ms. Zyblikewycz seems to have in great abundance — a wickedly funny sense of humor and an impressive sense of self - assurance, both qualities that would seem to be prerequisites for someone engaged in the fast - track, high pressure environment in which she works. When she takes time to decompress, Ms. Zyblikewycz enjoys cooking and gardening, because, as she notes — “Eggs and plants don’t talk back!” In 2008, she served as a volunteer gardener and trained as a docent at the U.S. Botanic Garden. Whi le she enjoys the challenge of tackling new baking techniques and recipes, her favorite culinary masterpiece is a pliatsok she learned to bake from her beloved maternal grandmother, Antonina Mycak, a woman who helped raise her, and who is sorely missed. H elena Zyblikewycz is the daughter of Eugene and Stephania Zyblikewycz, a member of UNWLA Branch 88, Philadelphia Regional Council. She and her husband, attorney Jamie Earl, reside in the nation’s capital. She is currently em - ploy ing her skills as a former lobbyist to convince her husband to add a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog puppy to the family.
