PARTICIPATION IS THE KEY As a member of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, I feel that a women of Ukrainian ancestry who does not speak Ukrainian can still be an active member of the organization and participate fully in her Branch. Most of the UNWLA Branches conduct their meet ings in Ukrainian, but English speaking members such as myself can have an input, because I do understand the Ukrainian conversation. The main issue here is to get involved with the different committees and the func tions they perform. Choose one you would enjoy work ing with. Language need not be a barrier toward that end. As president of the UNWLA’s Branch #108 I see the interaction between English speaking and Ukrainian speaking members, and find it very beneficial. The ties of my family in Ukraine, the Ukrainian culture and tradi tions are important in my life and much of it is extended to my participation in Branch 108. Very little knowledge of the Ukrainian language should not discourage a woman of Ukrainian back ground from joining UNWLA. The English speaking member of the organization and the Ukrainian speaking member need each other and both can be of tremen dous value to the Ukrainian community. А хто то вчера виспівував ’’ніщо нам лихо, ні пригоди” — Енергійним рухом поправив перев’язку на очах, лишивши малий куток менше запухлого ока, взяв енергійно під руку та випровадив на город. Я мимо хіть давала себе провадити його сильній постаті, слухала про фронтові випадки супроти яких моя пригода була мов зернина піску на пустині, з приєм ністю вбирала в себе тепло сонця і тепло відданої приязні та зрілого співчуття старого вояка до доро стаючого ’’дівчатиська”. Сон Штіфа починав сповня тися. Жало маленької бджілки вкололо мене не тіль ки в око, але ще глибше в душу. Я найшла вірного приятеля і сопутника на довге, сповнене пригод і подорожей далеких (навіть ко раблем до Нового світу) життя! Просимо присилати до ’’Нашого Життя” статті, дописи, посмертні згадки і т.п. призначені виключно для нашого журналу, а не копії матеріялів, які рівно часно висилаєте до інших часописів чи журналів. ’НАШЕ Ж ИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 1989 23 don’t speak Ukrainian but love the culture and traditions of their ancestors. A woman who speaks only English can have a voice in any Branch. If her cotribution of ideas is genuine and constructive, everyone will listen. There are many as pects of our organization that are stimulating and re warding to pursue. For example, the magazine “OUR LIFE” has an English section, which welcomes articles. Other inviting fields of interest within Branches are: nursery schools, culture, membership, scholarship, spe cial events, museum, sunshine and press. The various committees dealing with the above mentioned subjects in every Branch sure can use Eng lish speaking individuals. There are many different pro jects created by Branches as well as the Central Head quarters which can entice any member to participation. Keep in mind that you should have realistic goals to attain. Fear and aprehension can make ypu hesitate in joining a committee in the Branch. A member also has the choice to join any Branch in the League where she feels most comfortable. Getting" absorbed and feeling confident are key factors. The UNWLA is an organization for all women of Ukrainian heritage. Далеко на обрії я побачив перлові воро та неба. Я ще раз поглянув назад, щоб пригадати собі усі кроки, які я зробив продовж" мого життя. Позаду я бачив на гладкій дорозі дві пари слідів на піску, але там де дорога була стрімка та важка до переходу — була тільки одна пара слідів. Я запитав Господа: "Боже, я вірив, що Ти завжди будеш іти поруч мене у важких чи легких хвилинах. Але в часі важкої дороги я бачу тільки одну пару слі дів, чому?” Господь відповів: ’’Моя дитино, я був завжди з тобою під час твоєї мандрівки, але через найбільш небезпечні і важкі стежки я тебе переносив”.
