The newly formed English-speaking Branch #98 of the UNWLA are (I to r) Sonia Kralik, Lida Bellmer, Ann Pedersen, Dorothy Stefaniw, Victoria Mischenko, Vera Yurecko, President, Christine Jurkiw- Roland, and Helen Kaczmarsky. new Branch by its godmothers Mrs. Natalia Chaplenko and her daughters Mrs. Anna Krawczuk and Mrs. Maria Polanskyj. These three women were most instrumental in organizing the Branch and getting it on its feet. In commemoration of the Millennium, Branch #98 pres ented Dr. Ratych with a painting of St. Olha (the work of Chris tine Jurkiw-Roland) to be donated to the Ukrainian Museum. Msgr. Borsa completed the formal part of the proceedings with a blessing. During the luncheon several guests took the podium to wish the new Branch success. Other speakers addressed the audience on subjects pertaining to UNWLA. Mrs. Hnateyko spoke of the UNWLA pioneers in Ukraine. Mrs. Olga Trytyak, National Board Education representative brought the guests up to date on the status of the Ukrainian contribution to the Amer ican Museum of European Immigration of Ellis Island. Msgr. Borsa took this opportunity to speak on Ukraine’s short lived independence 70 years ago. Last, but not least, Ann Pedersen, Branch Vice President explained why members of the new Branch chose St. Olha as their patroness. Following the luncheon, the entertainment portion of the event featured Ms. Odarka Polansky performing two harp solos. The audience also enjoyed hearing Christine Jurkiw-Roland sing two Ukrainian songs. Eight door prizes were distributed to the lucky winners. The affair ended with Branch President Vera Yurecko’s farewell address. However many guests stayed for along while after to get better acquainted with members of the new Branch and to admire the splendid river view. All in all, a good time was had by everyone!
