NEWS FROM HEADQUARTERS * The V Congress of Free Ukrainians proclaimed 1989 as the Year of the Ukrainian Language. Branches of UNWLA are urged to make appropriate applications in their agendas for the year to honor, use and propagate the Ukrainian language. * March is “History of Women” month. Every year on this month UNWLA honor Ukrainian women who have made significant contributions to Ukrainian history and culture. Two women will be honored this year — writer Lesia Ukrainka on the 75th anniversary of her death, and Natalena Koroleva on the 100th anniversary of her birth. * The “Manuscripts of the Princely Era” slide presenta tion has texts available in the English and French languages. * Branches are asked to urge their local libraries to stock the new book by Martha Bohachevsky-Chomiak “Feminists Despite Themselves — Women in Ukrainian Community Life 1884-1939” and the book “New Genera tion and Cultural Modernism in Ukraine” by Myroslava Mudrak. * UNWLA’s Branch #38 in Denver, Colorado celebrated its 10th Anniversary on Decem ber 4, 1988. C on gratulations! * The conference of the Presidents of Regional Councils of UNWLA will be held on May 20th and 21st, 1989 in New York. During the conference there will be a meeting of the Nominating Committee of the XXII Convention of UNWLA. Maria Motyl (Branch #1) and Lidia Kramarchuk (Branch #18) were sponsored by the Executive Com mittee and elected to the Nominating Committee by the National Board. The Nominating Committee consists of the nine presidents of Regional Councils and two organization members. * The Ukrainian Cultural Association of Argentina is in dire need of books and school texts for youngsters which would serve in learning the Ukrainian language, history, geography, literature, songs, dances, embroi dery, etc. These books are needed by the Ukrainian schools sponsored by the Association. The Executive Committee of UNWLA urges Branches and their members to help this worthy cause. In almost every household where children have already grown up, there are many books which they had used during their school days in Ukrainian schools. Rather than gathering dust, these books can be put to good use, helping Ukrainian folks in Argentina educate their children. Please send packages with the books to: Asociacion Cultural de Posadas “27 De Agosto” Jerbal 1620 3300 — Posada, Misiones Argentina Attn: Mr. Mykola Moroz, President Please inform the Executive Committee when such packages have been sent.
