OUR LIFE M ONTHLY, published b у Ukrainian ational Women’s League of America Vol. XX XI. APRIL, 1974 EDITORIAL The N ational Board of the U N W L A extends Easter G reet ings to all mem bers and officers of Branches and Regions. This year, beginning the ob servance of our 50th anniver sary, all of our w ork and effo rt is aim ed in th at direction, w ith members and officers w orking together as one. W e would hope th at this cooperation would be directed not only to jo in t prepa- tions, but would extend fu rth er out into com m unity and national actions. O UR L IF E , which observed its 30th anniversary this year, dem onstrates on its pages th at “there is no today w ithout yes terday and tom orrow, nor tom or row w ithout yesterday and to day.” One example in this issue is the article on ancient pottery pysanky which draw our atten tion and thoughts, at least fo r a M arch, 1974, m arked the 35th A nniversary of the proclam ation of C arpatho-U kraine as an inde pendent country. The 1.00th A n niversary of the b irth of M on- signor D r. Augustin Voloshyn, President of C arpatho-U kraine and known as “Father of Trsns- carpathia,” was observed a t the same tim e. W hen the Hungarians crossed m oment, from the excitingly lovely pysanky of today to the artistic works of the long ago “yesterday.” W e have passed on our trad i tions from generation to genera tion. Holiday traditions are al ways in danger of losing their fundam ental significance through our attem pt to adapt them to m odern circumstances. W e m ust therefore strive to m aintain the continuity of deep religious and national signifi cance in our traditions, w hile at the same tim e we adapt to pres ent day living. This continuity of tradition w ill bind our gene ration to each other. W ith such continuity spring comes each year bringing new life from the old. W ith such con tinuity, for alm ost 2000 years, we celebrate the Resurrection of Christ. the Carpathian m ountains in 985 A. In 1895 a m onum ent was erected by the Hungarians, in w hat is now Vorota, to m ark the 1000th an niversary of their occupation. On January 21, 1919, follow ing the departure of the H ungarians w ith the end of W orld W ar-1, a No. 1 m eeting of delegates from all the villages of Transcarpathia was held at Khust, at which a unani mous decision was reached — “W e w ill strive towards U kraine, towards K iev.” However, having no other alternatives at the tim e, Transcarpathia voluntarily be came a part of Czechoslovakia which guaranteed wide autono m y. Despite 1000 years of H ungar ian dom ination, the Carpatho- Ukrainians had not forgotten th at th at they were an insepar able part of the people of the Dnieper and Dnister, nor had they forgotten that they were the m asters of th eir land. The younger generation begun building an U krainian national life. Organizations (Plast, etc.), choruses, sports clubs, etc. were established and grew. The Czech governm ent’s fa il ure to stem the rise of U krainian nationalism in w hat they consid ered to be th eir “colony,” was dem onstrated by the participa tion of thousands of U krainian boys and girls carrying U krain ian flags in a mass m arch in Prague w here an “all-national” convention was being held. In October, 1937, the Czech governm ent was finally forced to fu lfill its promise of autono m y for Transcarpathia and named a “Carpatho-Rusin,” A n- drej Broda, Prem ier. H e was, however, unmasked as a H u n garian w orking for the annexa tion of Transcarpathia to H un gary, and was deposed. la th e r Agustine Voloshyn was then named Prem ier of Transcarpa thia. In February, 1939, 92% of the votes to the Carpatho- U krainian Senate w ent to m em bers of the U krainian nationalist party, and the C arpatho-U krain- On the 35th Anniversary Of Carpatho-Ukraine 28 НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ — іКШТЕНЬ, 1974 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
