UKRAINIAN WOMAN OUR ENGLISH COLUMN Easter Day The E aster chimes shall again unite 'the faithful into one joyous community. Because the R esur rection is not merely the proof of Divinity of Jesus Christ, it is 'the symbol of final victory of the Good over the evil in the world, of the lfe’s light over the death’s darkness. The world has ever been divid ed into those that like the Oint- bearing women had believed the first tidings of Resurrection, had rejoiced and went forth to an nounce it to the world, and those who like doubting Thomas, would not believe until they poked their fingers into the open wounds, so as to be convinced, w hether it is lie, or not. There are the nations that, in their m ajority, are able to per ceive the wisdom of Christ and adopt His truth through the evi dence of logical sequence. These are th e western nations. They be came, in time, the home of ration alistic thinking. Other nations that, in their m a jority, accept Christ through in trinsic nature of their soul, through their heart, and th eir be lief cannot be shaken by counter acting reasoning. The Ukrainian people belong into this group of nations that accepted the truth of the Resurrection of Christ like those first O int-bearing women. The rightful proprietor of chor- nozem is for the thousandth time repeating the joyous words: The Christ is risen ! In thousand years wars, invasions and occupations passed through his land and often destroyed the sacrosanct treas ures of their forefathers. Christ is risen! — resounds still in U k raine and the oppressed and per secuted U krainian is rising again from the ruins to struggle for his new life, hoping that the Sun of T ruth will shine in it. Truly ITe has risen! — is the answ er from the breasts of the people that trust in the day of victory of the truth over the evil, of life over the death. And no one could have shaken his trust. Lengthy moments, hours and days of suffering, of death passed before the Resurrection of Christ. And it seemed to His disciples th a t eternal night came over hu manity. The lam entations of M o ther of God shook the earth when the tortured Body was being tak en down from the cross. H und reds of angels had been Availing in desperation over the suffering and death of the Son of God and pain of the Virgin Mary. And the days of despondency had passed and the Day of Resurrection has come.. And a new serene, out of this world, figure of Christ shone brightly for all nations of the world. A ray of this light reached also the remote land of Ukraine and uplifted the soul of its people who believed in Him. And the Ukrainian people has been treading across the ages, through the storm s of wars, harassm ents under alien occupa tions. Long, long like eternity is the thorny path of the Ukrainian peo ple. It seems that im penetrable darkness enshrouded all corners of the world. Some of U kraine’s daughters and sons were thrown into Siberia and Kazakhstan, others were forced into dispersion the world over. Still the ray of the bright light of Christ’s Resurrection is shining in their hearts, and with it sur vives the adamantine trust in the final vanquishing of the evil by the right, in the lucent Day of R estoration which is following the night of tribulations. And the prophetic words of Shevchenko shall come true : The church-coffin Shall break asund. r, And from beneath U kraine shall rise again. And shall disperse The darkness of slavery, And the light of tru th shall shine And the enslaved children Shall freely pray again.
