НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ • Березень-Квітень 2026 13 ДІЯЛЬНІСТЬ ВІДДІЛІВ І ЧЛЕНКИНЬ • BRANCH & MEMBER NEWS Branch 17 Commemorates the Holodomor Hanya (Anna) Maksymowich , Secretary, Branch 17, Miami, FL Members of UNWLA Branch 17 in Mi - ami chose to honor the souls lost in the Holodomor with a presentation of Two Regimes on November 24, 2025. Organized by branch president Patricia Krysa and held at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church in Miami, the program show - cased the life’s work of two Ukrainian women: a mother, Teodora Verbitskaya, who wrote about her life from 1920 to 1945, and her daughter Nadia Werbitz - ky, a professionally trained artist who painted from memory. Both women were witnesses to both the Holodomor and the Holocaust in Mariupol, Ukraine. Art collectors Mimi Shaw and Kelly Bowen are responsible for rescuing and restoring many of Werbitzky’s paintings, and the published book Two Regimes was translated into English from Ver - bitskaya’s original memoir. The memoir is said to be unique in its honesty and clarity because, unlike most similar arti - facts, it was not written until Verbitskaya lived in a land of safety and freedom — the United States. Branch 17 members at the Two Regimes event. A display at the event. Attendees enjoyed a lunch of borshch, varenyky, and salad, provided by members of the branch, followed by a moving film produced by the Two Regimes organization that highlighted excerpts from the book and photos of many of the paintings. Patricia Krysa and Olena Antonaccio spoke in English and Ukrainian, respectively, detailing Branch 17’s plans to ask Mi - ami-Dade and Broward counties to include Two Regimes as part of their Holodomor/genocide curriculum. The Two Regimes organization’s goal is to educate the Amer - ican public, and, indeed, the world, about the double atrocity that these women (and so many like them) faced. The visual and literary masterpieces they created because of those har - rowing experiences truly touched the hearts of attendees that afternoon. According to their official website, www.tworegimes.com, “ Two Regimes was written to validate the lives of those Ukrainians, Jews, Greeks, and others whose lives were lost and whose voices were silenced forever.” Donations were collected afterwards, and the proceeds will be used by Branch 17 to purchase copies of the book to do - nate to local school and public libraries so that other South Floridians can learn about their story as well. It is also the UNWLA's objective to have the Holodomor taught in our pub - lic schools as part of genocide studies. More information on Two Regimes can be found on their website, including how to share their film and book, and how otherwise to support the organization’s ongoing efforts.
