26 OUR LIFE • January-February 2026 Branch 95 Hosts Centennial Celebration of Ukrainian American Women ДІЯЛЬНІСТЬ ВІДДІЛІВ І ЧЛЕНКИНЬ • BRANCH & MEMBER NEWS On Sunday, November 2, at Locust Grove in Poughkeepsie, NY — a love - ly gallery and event venue that is part of the Samuel Morse Estate & His - toric Site overlooking the Hudson River — Branch 95 hosted a Celebra - tion of Ukrainian American Women that focused on the contributions of Ukrainian women artists and shared many beautiful examples of our culture, traditions, and heritage with our American neighbors. This am - bitious event honored the UNWLA’s 100th Anniversary, reflecting the organization’s century of inspiration and dedication to empowering fu - ture generations to advocate for their culture, heritage, and homeland. The event was the brainchild of Branch 95 member Ulana Salewycz, a local artist and devotee of all Ukrainian artists as well as the Ukrain - ian Museum in New York City. Her many connections and friendships allowed us to bring an impressive circle of artists together for this fab - ulous event, which showcased examples of fine art, folk art, music, poetry, and film along with cultural displays, samplings of Ukrainian food, and Ukrainian crafts and craft vendors. The fine arts were represented by a display of 39 works by renowned Ukrainian women artists, including contemporary and local artists Ilona Sochynsky, Christine Saj, Armine Bozhko, Laryssa Martiniuk, and Adelina Deryabina. The artwork of Branch 95 members Ulana Salewycz, Vitalia Deriabina, Marianna Crans, and the late Catherine Gorham was also shown. Folk and cultural artists included a pysanka artist, a Petry - kivka artist, and a wool artist, exemplifying the variety of our dynamic cultural artforms. We were also fortunate to have a musician and ban - durist, as well as two renowned contemporary poets and a documen - tary filmmaker all sharing their talents. The UNWLA’s century of work and dedication was honored in a very special presentation. After the opening and event overview by event chair Ulana Salewycz and the welcome by Branch 95 president Oksana Dashawetz, Petry - kivka artist Vitalia Deriabina presented the Petrykivka style of painting and its incorporation into her dynamic art piece entitled 50 +1 Tree of Life . Next came a reading, in both Ukrainian and English, by Lila Dlaboha and Olena Jennings of Lesia Ukrainka’s famous poem Con- tra Spem Spero (Against All Hope, I Hope). The power of the poem that so beautifully exemplifies the Ukrainian spirit was felt throughout the room. Mike Jurkovic displayed children’s artwork brought from Ukraine by Luidmyla Yakibchuk and shared a very inspiring presenta - tion, poignantly illustrated by the children of war-torn Ukraine. Af - terwards, the UNWLA centennial history film A Century of Strength: Inspiring Generations was fittingly introduced by UNWLA Honorary President Marianna Zajac, a member and founder of Branch 95. This was followed by beautiful bandura music and Ukrainian folk songs by musician and songwriter Olya Fryz.
