12 OUR LIFE • January-February 2026 A Get-Together to Remember: Branches 96 and 142 ДІЯЛЬНІСТЬ ВІДДІЛІВ І ЧЛЕНКИНЬ • BRANCH & MEMBER NEWS With so many new Ukrainian arrivals in our cities, the Ukrainian American diaspora has seen a revival and renewed energy in our existing ethnic commu - nities and organizations. As a result, our communi - ties have grown exponentially, as have its organiza - tions, such as the UNWLA and its Detroit Regional Council, made up of nine branches. Some of these branches comprise the original founding members and their descendants, while others are composed of new arrivals. Through our common language and historical background, we have found a way to plan, work, and play together, but having grown up in different environments and cultures, we realize too often that we really don’t know each other. To remedy this, Branch 96, founded in 1968 and led by president Catherine Kizyma, decided to be - come better acquainted with one of the newest branches, Branch 142, its president Irena Khom - chak, and its 23 newly arrived, younger members, by holding a “meet and greet” event. A Branch 96 committee made up of Myrosia Stefaniuk, who spearheaded the initiative, Catherine Kizyma, Marta Lada Pelensky Prokop, Oksanna Gudz, Catherine Kizyma, Myrosia Stefaniuk , Branch 96, Detroit Kwitkowsky, and Luba Szajenko planned a fun-filled social with “let’s get to know each other” games and questions and a unique sing-along, followed by a buffet of finger foods and sweets. Marta pre - pared and mailed invitations to the members of each branch, while Catherine organized the event and Luba helped with the buffet. We also held sev - eral planning meetings with Irena Khomchak, Lud - myla Telebzda, and Nadiya Yakymets of Branch 142. The event was held on Sunday afternoon, Sep - tember 14, 2025, in the Hall of the UNWLA Detroit Regional Council “Domivka” in Warren, MI. One side of the Hall exhibited 20 dolls in national cos - tumes of Ukraine, crafted by Olga Papisz, while the other side exhibited photographs of UNWLA Hon - orary Members from the Detroit Region and group photos of branch members. Chairs were arranged on opposite sides for close proximity. Branch 96 president Catherine Kizyma warmly welcomed the attending members, and MC Myrosia Stefaniuk in - vited each member to introduce herself and share a little something about her past.
