“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, СІЧЕНЬ 2012 WWW. UNWLA.ORG 23 UNWLA Branch 88 Reviews Accomplishments and Elects New Officers by Petrusia Sawchak Philadelphia’s Branch 88 members at the annual meeting. Jenkintown, Pa. The annual meeting and elections of Philadelphia's Branch 88 were held on Saturday, October 29, 2011, at the Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center (UECC). Representing the Philadelphia R e- gional Council was President Iryna Buczkow s- ka. Organized in 1938, the Philadelphia R e- gional Council of the UNWLA is located in UECC, a nd six of its 14 branches, which serve four states, hold meetings there. During the meeting, the accomplis h- ments of Branch 88 were reviewed and di s- cussed. For many years, this group has devoted much time and effort to the promulgation of the arts, particu larly, Ukrainian folk arts. This past year there was a comprehensive exhibit entitled " Gerdany — Ukrainian Beadwork" held in the Dr. Alexander B. Chernyk Gallery in UECC for three days, April 1 - 3. The exhibit was conducted with the assistance of the Manorly Bead Club and the Ukrainian Heritage Studies Center (UHSU) at Manor College, whose director, Chrystyna Prokopovych, is also Branch 88's Arts and Culture Committee chairperson. In addition to the exhibit, there was also a seminar by three well - known autho rities on gerdany — Lubow Wolynetz, Olga Kolodij, and Maria R y- pan as well as workshops for children and adults in this craft. The project was supported by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Another highlight this year was being awarded first place in the 32 nd Annual Festival of Trees Display at the Pearl Buck House in Perkasie, Pennsylvania. Members of UNWLA Branch 88, UHSU, and the Manorly Bead Club from Manor College decorated a Christmas tree with hand - crafted beaded ornaments and a room with Ukrainian folk art items such as e m- broidery, straw angels, and Ukrainian - style teddy bears. The display was exhibited for the month of December 2010. The focus of this e x- hibit was also to share the beautiful Ukrainian heritage with the American community - at - large. During the year members of Branch 88 work on crafts to prepare for special exhibits and also participate in UECC's Chri stmas B a- zaar that is held in December. There were eleven articles written about the branch's activities for the year by six diffe r- ent authors: Chrystyna Prokopovych, Anna Mak symowych, Petrusia Sawchak, Tamara Stadnychenko with Tetjana Artymyshyn - Danyliw, and Natalia Komar. The articles were published in five different periodicals: America , The Ukrainian Weekly , Svoboda, Our Life , and MIST . Other members of the branch worked on compiling the Philadelphia Regional Cou n- cil's newly published cookbook entitled Sharing
