Kalytovska, one of her Galician cousins, shortly after Kateryna's death, "Koliunia was both sympathetic and cheerful. Everyone who met her remarked upon this." Like the land in which she was bom, she deserved a much better fate. BIBLIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Kateryna's efforts on behalf of her father's scholarly heritage did not go in vain. After the emergence of independent Ukraine in the early 1990s, the manuscript of the sixth vol ume of M. Hrushevsky's History of Ukrainian Literature was found in the Academy archives and was finally pub lished. Other materials are also coming out, including secret police records about Hrushevsky' and his family. The mate rials on the family available prior to the Gorbachev reforms are gathered together in my Mykhailo Hrushevsky: The Politics of National Culture (Toronto, 1987), from which the quote by Natalia Polonska-Vasylenko was taken. The most extensive post-Gorbachev treatment is Iryna Matiash's "Curriculum Vitae Kateryny Hrushevskoi," Pamiat stolit, no. 3 (Kyiv, 1997), 96-111, which inspired me to write the present English-language summary of Kateryna's life and which I relied upon for outlines of Kateryna's scholarly pub lications. (The University of Toronto Library has a photo copy of the first volume of the Corpus of Folk Dumas but none of Kateryna's other books.) Iryna Matiash's article is richly illustrated. A much briefer summary by the same author is her "Reabilitovana posmertno: Kateryna Hrushevska," Slovo і Chas, no. 10 (1996), 68-9. The ex tracts from Kateryna's last letter to her mother quoted in the present article are from a full text printed in Yaroslav Malyk, "Kateryna Hrushevska," Ukrainskyi istoryk, XXVIII/XXIX (1991-92), 265-77. The quote from Kateryna's correspon dence with her Galician relatives is from Marta Kalytovska, "Pamiati Marii ta Kateryni Hrushevskykh," in number 4 (1956), 9-10. The Ukrainian Historical Association in the United States is planning to publish a full edition of Polon- ska-Vasylenko's memoirs in the near future and these may contain some further information. It is to be hoped that Iryna Matiash and her colleagues in Ukraine will continue to gather materials about Kateryna's life and that some day a full biography will appear. THOMAS M.
