America. Indeed, we’ve become the most blessed peo ple і nthe world. For the land of our forbears is finally free, though still in need of a hand up. And we — as Americans —are in a position to do something about it. So let me echo others in saying, “America is a magnificent country. I am proud to be one of her sons.” And let me point to the most telling data point of all. As effective as many in our community and our com pany tonight have become, our collective efforts would make little difference if this President and this Adminis- tratiorfrom top to bottom did not truly get it — substan tively, in terms of Ukraine’s vital geopolitical role, and emotionally, in terms of the cruel indignities Ukraine has long suffered and still has reason to fear. I’ve looked the policymakers in the eye and I know it. I saw those same eyes glisten at the Chornobyl event. I’ve seen them bemoan, in their own words, Ukraine’s “70-year forced march to nowhere.” And with you, I applauded Secretary of State Christopher’s excellent speech in Prague on NATO enlargement, and on the same March trip — standing at President Kuchma’s side in Kyiv —his decisive debunking of the Duma vote purporting to declare illegal the dissolution of the Soviet empire. Make no mistake, the policymakers all get it. And one good reason is that — above all and enabling all, in deed as in word — the President and First Lady get it. This attitude and policy toward Ukraine represents a sea change at the White House and a blessing for our community. It enhances and multiplies the efforts of everyone in this room. And we must not ever take it for granted. These truths, I submit, are worth pondering —tonight and for a long time to come. MICROWAVE RECIPES CHICKEN CACCIATORE (You can make this dish the night before and reheat it at serving time. Serve it over buttered egg noodles or hot fluffy rice.) 1 cup chopped celery 1/2 cup chopped onion 1 Tbs olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced 3 Tbs flour 1 can (28 oz) tomatoes (undrained) 1 cup sliced mushrooms 1/2 cup dry white wine or chicken stock 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley 1 Tbs brandy (optional) 1 tsp each: salt, paprika and dried oregano 1/2 tsp. dried basil 1 bay leaf 1/4 tsp. pepper 4 chicken breasts (2 lbs. total) skinned — In 12-cup casserole, combine celery, onion, oil and garlic. Microwave at High for 4 minutes or until vege tables are tender, stirring once. — Blend in flour until vegetables are coated; stir in tomatoes, breaking up with fork. Stir in mushrooms, wine, parsley, brandy (if using), salt, paprika, oregano, bay leaf, basil and pepper. Cover and microwave at High for 5 minutes, stirring once. Remove bay leaf. — Add chicken to casserole, arranging thick portions toward outside of dish. Cover and microwave at High for 30 minutes, or until chicken is no longer pink, rotat ing dish once.
