Lidia Czemyk with the medical staff of the Regional Pediatric Hospital in Lviv. Ukraine. Dr. A. Mendiuk. director. In the years 1990-1992 UNWLA purchased directly from the pharmaceutical companies blood analysers for the Regional Pediatric Hospital in Lviv, Ukraine, at the cost of $ 126,000.00. To the delight of Dr. Petruch, lab director, this state of the art medical equipment helps speed the blood analysis with the minimum of blood samples drawn from the small patients — the children. In his words: “the speedier the analysis — the faster the diagnosis and treatment”. Through the efforts of Olha and Myron Hnateyko another blood analyser (value: $10,000.00) was sent to a hospital in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine. The possibility of the UNWLA/CCRF Joint MRI Pro ject became a reality in 1993 when it was approved by the UNWLA Convention. The responsibility for coordi nating fund raisers throughout the UNWLA fell on Lidia Czemyk. Together with the Social Welfare Committee and with the cooperation of the UNWLA membership, Bran ches and Regional Councils, the needed funds were raised. This great achievement was the result of sacrifice, hard work and countless volunteer hours of many “soju- zanky” throughout the USA who understood the impor tance and the need of this project. We appreciate the trust of the Ukrainian Americans and their communities who proved once again that our projects are worthy of their support. We thank them for their contributions and for having confidence in our organization. On June 24, 1994, the UNWLA/CCRF/GE Joint Pro ject became a reality after negotiations and appropriate agreements were signed by all parties involved. The keys to the MRI were presented to Dr. G. Roshchin and following the training of radiologists and technitians by General Electric, it will be in operation in the near future. Both the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America and Children of Chornobyl Relief Foundation received honorary citations from the government of Ukraine for the humanitarian medical aid that they have given to the people of Ukraine. At the press conference at Boryspil Airport in Kyyiv, led by Dr. Zenon Matkiwsky, Anna Krawczuk spoke to the assembly that included (besides reporters) repre sentatives of CCRF, US Embassy, the Vice Premier of Ukraine, Mykola Zhulynsky, Dr. Bronyslaw Omencinsky and Deputy Volodymyr Yavorivsky of the Ukrainian government. She said: “Please allow me to convey greetings to you from all the members of ‘Sojuz Ukra- jinok Ameryky’. Our delegation includes Lidia Czemyk, the UNWLA Social Welfare Chair, who worked diligently and selflessly for several years in coordinating the fund raisers that enabled us to cultimate this project: Dr. Chry- Dr. A.
