THE UKRAINIAN MUSEUM A CULTURAL EXPERIENCE Date: January 28, 1993 From: The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine To: Titus Hewryk President of the Board of Trustees of The Ukrainian Museum Dear Mr. Hewryk: The Ukrainian Museum is well known in Ukraine. Its work in preserving our national culture and in propagating it within the American community through exhibitions is held in high esteem. We were pleased to learn that Americans of Ukrainian descent have decided to build a new museum facility and subsequently have launched a fundraising campaign to support this project. In the current historical climate a new Ukrainian Museum building in New York City will provide opportunities that will insure the development of Ukrain ian cultural activities in the United States, and address the needs necessary to the development of a friendly relationship between our two countries. The Cultural Ministry of Ukraine wishes you much success in this most vital and noble undertaking and is prepared to offer all possible assistance. I. Dziuba Minister of Culture Ukraine The Ukrainian Museum is very pleased to have received such an excellent letter of endorsement from Ukraine’s Minister of Culture, Ivan Dziuba. This is a very important document, for it clearly spells out the institu tion’s present and future mission. The Ukrainian Museum’s goal and purpose has al ways been to preserve our cultural heritage and to introduce it to the American community. Ukraine’s independence has opened a new vista of activity for the Museum. By virtue of its location in New York City, a global center of politics, finance and the arts, the Museum has the unprecedented opportunity to help Ukraine. The Ukrainian Museum can provide an avenue for museums in Ukraine to show important exhibitions, build a bridge through which exchanges between Amer ican museums and those in Ukraine can be conducted, become a resource for museums in Ukraine through which professional and financial assistance may be obtained, and provide the stage for international exposure. The Museum has already begun such work on a small scale, but to expand it to its fullest, the institution needs a new, modern, representative facility. The Muse um’s Building Fundraising Committee has been very active in the last few months targeting our communities throughout the country, looking to public and private funding agencies as well as to the business sector, requesting support. A new Ukrainian Museum building in New York City is no longer a matter of parochial interest, but concerns every Ukrainian of American descent in the United States. A successful fundraising campaign will allow the building project to begin and end within a reasonable amount of time, so that the vital work on behalf of our thousand-year old culture and our newly-reborn Ukraine can commence. PLEASE SUPPORT THIS VERY IMPORTANT PROJECT! ’НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, КВІТЕНЬ, 1993 17
