so light skinned and therefore I w as often stopped and asked q u estions about my country and my organ ization. Olya Staw nycha and I were also fortunate to have met so m e very lovely people from the Mexican govern ment w ho later m anaged to help us obtain press cred entials (the passport to attending the official United Nations C onference), as well as invitations to various private and governmental receptions. One of the m ost lavish of these, was the reception given by the President of M exico at the Palace. Halya Hirniak from Ukrainian C on gress C ommittee of America, Olya and I were lucky to have received personal invitations to be the President's g u ests at this reception for digniteries. We were feasted with a five cou rse meal and entertained by the Mexican folkart Ballet and Mariaches. It w as at this particular reception that w e were filmed by NBC new s and were part of the telecast on Thursday, June 21st. Here w e had an oppor tunity to m eet and talk extensively with Dan Parker, the head of the U.S. delegation, and his a sso c ia te s Dr. Ruth B eacon, whom w e had met earlier during a National Council of W om en's Conference, Helvi Sipilia, the Secretary General of the International W om en's Year at the United Nations, as well with representatives from many of the official d elegations to the U.N. We tried to distribute leaflets on UNWLA's activities as well as the booklet respecting political prisoners at every oppor tunity. We later met th ese sa m e people at the Tribune and were able to carry through on many of our initial conversations. While the Ukrainian w om en on Miss Beck's com m ittee held their hunger strike which brought much publicity in the local papers, the Canadian Professional W om en's League, represented by Christina Isaiwa and Bohdanna Chuma, worked with the Canadian press to assure coverage in the future. We were also fortunate to find a g o o d friend in the Press Information Office at the United Nations and w e also were able to arrange for future in su ch publications as the CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR and other United States publications. We were also following up a future story in a leading Mexican and South American w om en 's magazine. During the Strike w e manned an exhibition booth displaying many of the kilims and embroideries supplied by the w om en from TUSM, and had an opportunity to distribute materials supplied by Sm olosk yp and the other organizations. We served coffee and cake and, in the informal atm osphere, were able not only to meet with other organizations., but to acquaint them with the work of UNWLA through a display of recent issu es of OUR LIFE and the Historic C ostum es. A particular highlight of the exhibit w as a photo of a kilim by Steph- ania Shabatura which invited many questions. There was a photo of each prisoner on the walls with in depth explanations containing her life history, activities and sen ten ce. Evenings were not very exciting, as w e all tried to work clo sely together, holding m eetin gs and briefings for the following day. I particularly recall with read spending six hours Xeroxing the Memorandum respecting the plight of Ukrainian W om en Political Pris- oners, signed by all the d elegates and spon sored by the World C o n g ress of Free Ukrainians, which our delegation presented to President Ojedra, at the United Nations. We distributed c lo se to 1,000 c o p ies to all the official delegates. We also held a press con feren ce respecting the hunger strike chaired by Andrij Semetiuk and although it w as very su ccessfu l, it was h assle to prepare the press. However whether it ca m e to writing, typing, Xeroxing or stuffing, everyone pitched right in. On the last night of the Tribune, UNWLA and WFUWO sp on sored a cocktail party at the Del Prado Hotel for our new found friends. D espite the heavy downpour, our friends from Canada, Mexico, the United States, Japan, France, Germany, and mem bers of the press and the United Nations ca m e and w e parted with prom ises to keep in touch and continue to work to gether towards peace, and equality. Youthful Writers Illusion of Reality by Martha Wynnyckyj Is life but not a constant search For a fulfilment never to be found? A search that finds moments of happiness Which fade into memories of the past? Is love not an illusion, a lovely detour in the road we all follow? A newly-found self, another fresh meaning for desperate thoughts? Oh, how wrong are those Who can not see through love's illusion! For love's illusion is reality, For reality which, in its course, Leads us not only to ourselves, but to each other. НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ, ЛИПЕНЬ—СЕРПЕНЬ 1975 21 Mrs. Helvi Sipila and Mrs. Adele Fischer with UNWLA delegates Mrs. Olya Stawnycha and Camille Smorodsky at the Bauquet at President's Palace in Mexico City.
