Side Lines and Personalities Conference of ICW, Istanbul Friendly hospitality, coopera tion, and attention accorded the delegates to the ICW conference by the National Council of Wo men of Turkey and th e Officials of Turkish Government was praise worthy. The corps of stu dent volunteers who served us daily as guides, interpreters, and inform ers especially captivated my interest. Who knows but for three triennial conferences hence these young girls m ight be the guiding lights of th e Turkish Council. While all th e girls were excel lent, Oya Borecki, pictured w ith a group in the November issue of OUR LIFE is but one I can men tion in the lim ited space of print. Like the other students, she had trem endous knowledge of her country’s history, culture, trad i tions, and folklore. We learned th a t she was not especially train ed, bu t th a t this knowledge was a normal requirem ent in the course of study. H er deep love of country and intense pride in its people were tru ly adm irable in one so young. I shall always re member th e legend of th e Girl Tower (lighthouse), which Oya told me as we stood on deck of the boat returning from Bursa, once the great capitol of Turkey. The skyline of Istanbul afforded a m agnificent view as our boat drew nearer and nearer to shore. To the rig h t of us was th e Tow er. The story has it th a t a daugh te r of one of th e g reat rulers of dishes partaken a t “Svyata Vet- chera” which follows every as pect of U krainian culture. A fter the prayer and “kootya” is par taken, th e dozen traditional dish es are passed around. W hen th e Holy Supper is ended th e group sta rts carolling which usually continues on until everyone is ready to go home. On January 14, 1961 the “Svyata V etchera” was held in the building of the P arm a Sav ings Bank, Parm a, Ohio. Jenn i e Bochar Turkey had a deathly fear of snakes.. To safe guard her from this menacing fear her fath er had a tow er built wherein she would dwell. Since the tow er was surrounded by w ater food had to be brought in from shore. One day a lovely basket of grapes was brought in, and hidden therein beneath th e grapes was a serpent. It bit th e beautiful princess and thus ended her life and fear. Therefore, the name of th e lighthouse, the Girl Tow er. Indeed, a legend w ith a moral. As Oya was telling the story, my thoughts traveled up the Bos phorus, across the Black Sea to the golden-domed City of Kiev — and I wondered, how m any girls THERE of Oya’s age were as FR EE to point out the beauty of their ancient City, tell the true story of its glorious past, and the present plight of the heroic U krainian people. W hen Helen H natyshyn and I m et another tim e to attend the fashion show of Turkish embroi deries a t the Dolmabache Palace, we decided to walk and see the sights. Our sense of direction soon left us and we became lost. Finally we reached th e Taksim Square, the main section of E u r opean Istanbul and stopped in a shop to ask directions to the Palace. Two gentlemen custom ers w i llingly offered to direct us. Obediently we followed and next thing we knew we were inside a huge building under construc tion. The gentlemen guided us in to the nearby tem porary office and to our surprise and enlight enm ent th e building was the New Opera Insaati, which would take two years to complete. The leader of th e two men, H ayati Tabanliogho, th e architect of the opera building showed us th e scale model of th e build ing, drawings of th e stage, the special acoustical ceiling, and so forth. This was a fortunate loss of direction, and we finally reached the Palace in the archi tect’s Volkswagen w ith all appre hensions erased, and secure in the knowledge th a t we were th e only two fortunate delegates to have had a glimpse of this mod ern opera house first hand. A. Volker AFTER OUR ANNIVERSARY The 35th anniversary of the U krainian National Women’s League of America is over. Our Regional Councils arranged ban quets on this occasion, and awarded to th e older Branches honorary certificates, and to its members special pins. This affair was celebrated elaborately, and w ith great dignity and solemnity in U krainian communities every where. The oldest Branches, and th eir members of the UNW LA were deeply moved by th e award. Get ting members, and working dur ing the long years they thought of as simply fulfilling th eir duty, and did not expect any thanks. Therefore, when they saw th eir efforts appreciated, th eir eyes filled w ith tears as they accept ed th e pin from th e hands of th eir President, Mrs. Helen Lo- totsky. This celebration of the anni versary was not prepared by them alone. The younger Branch es, and m embers also cooperated assiduously in arranging i t ; and did m ost of the hard work. They felt it was a feast of th e organi zation, and not of th e pioneer members alone. T hat it was th e oportunity to assum e th e respon sibility and joy of carrying th eir p a rt of th e work forw ard. Many fine ideas and sound projects came out of th e speech es, which could be taken into con sideration for fu tu re use. The pioneer m embers found new me thods necessary; th e American- born members were m ore inter ested in Ukrainian custom s; and th e newcomers declared them selves resolved to adapt them selves to th e American way of life. Members everywhere felt th e need of sticking together in order to accomplish th e goal of UNWLA. K atr i a Peleshok 18 НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ — СІЧЕНЬ, 1961.
