32 OUR LIFE • August 2026 ДІЯЛЬНІСТЬ ВІДДІЛІВ І ЧЛЕНКИНЬ • BRANCH & MEMBER NEWS Branch 56 Celebrates Vyshyvanka Day Patricia Zalisko , Press Secretary, Branch 56, North Port, FL Branch 56 members who call southwest Florida their home celebrated World Vyshyvanka Day on May 21 along with millions of Ukrainians around the globe. They donned their embroidered shirts and other attire to display their love of our culture and tra- ditions and to demonstrate their solidarity with Ukrainians who are fighting now for Ukraine’s sur - vival and sovereignty. Ukrainian embroideries are distinct to different regions of Ukraine, and the resulting patterns are unique. Ukrainian writer and journalist Lesia Voroniuk originated the holiday to pay homage to Ukrainian embroidery that preserves the country’s culture and ethnic identity. The holiday, as noted on the UNWLA website, “ensure[s] that vyshyvankas are seen, understood, and celebrated both in Ukraine and around the world.” The women of Branch 56 celebrated the day by wearing Ukrainian embroidered shirts and other items of clothing, both at home in southwest Flor - ida and wherever they were traveling. In Sarasota County, many non-ethnic Ukrainians who encoun - tered our members inquired about the beautiful embroidered clothing and expressed their support for the bravery and endurance of Ukrainians in de- fending their nation, its sovereignty, and its rich culture. This writer donned a Ukrainian t-shirt while visit - ing England for what I affectionately call “Babtsia” duty. It should be noted that many Ukrainians (pri - marily women and children) migrated to the U.K. after russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
