16 OUR LIFE • August 2026 ДІЯЛЬНІСТЬ ВІДДІЛІВ І ЧЛЕНКИНЬ • BRANCH & MEMBER NEWS A Century of Sisterhood: Reflecting on the New England Regional Council’s Celebration of the UNWLA Centennial Tania Sawa-Priatka , Branch 73, Bridgeport, CT; Advocacy & Press Chair, New England Regional Council On November 16, 2025, the Ukrainian community of New England gathered in New Haven, CT, for an evening that blended history, gratitude, and cultur - al pride. The New England Regional Council of the UNWLA marked the organization’s 100th anniver - sary with a celebration that felt both momentous and deeply personal — a tribute to the women who built the UNWLA and those who continue to carry its mission forward. The evening’s program unfolded with the warmth of a family gathering and the dignity of a centennial milestone. Co-hosts Svitlana Berezka and Tania Pri- atka, both members of Branch 73 in Bridgeport, CT, guided the evening in Ukrainian and English, weav - ing together stories, tributes, and reflections that illuminated the UNWLA’s century-long journey. Honoring Legacy Through Prayer and Memory The celebration opened with welcoming remarks from Olha Savchuk, president of the New England Regional Council, who invited the audience to rise for the UNWLA anthem. Its familiar melody — sung by generations of Ukrainian women — set the tone for an evening rooted in continuity and shared pur - pose. A solemn moment followed as the commu- nity honored UNWLA members who had passed away, as well as Ukraine’s defenders who gave their lives for freedom. Among those remembered was Kateryna Tanchyn, a founding member of Branch 139 in Stamford and later a pillar of Branch 73 in Bridgeport. Kateryna, who passed away last year, devoted decades of her life to the UNWLA. Her leadership, warmth, and unwavering commitment shaped the branches she served, and her absence was felt deeply throughout the hall. Voices of Support from Across the Community Throughout the evening, greetings and congrat - ulations reflected the breadth of the UNWLA’s impact. Representatives of the Regional Council and the National Board — Olha Savchuk and Oka Hrycak — spoke about the organization’s enduring mission and the strength of its membership. Part - ner organizations added their voices: Oles Kuzma of the Ukrainian Catholic University and UCU Foun - dation USA, Yuriy Lencyk of the Ukrainian Muse- um and Library in Stamford, and Myron Kolinsky of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) in Hartford. Their remarks underscored the UNWLA’s role as a cultural and humanitarian an- chor for the Ukrainian diaspora. Branch presidents from Hartford, Bridgeport, New Haven, Stamford, and Yonkers offered warm greetings, each reflect - ing the unique character of their communities yet united by the same spirit of service. A special moment came when Justin Elicker, the mayor of New Haven, CT, addressed the audience. His presence — and his sincere words of support for the Ukrainian community — highlighted the importance of local partnerships during such historic milestones. A Journey Through History and Humanitarian Work One of the most powerful segments of the evening was a historical video tracing the UNWLA’s path from 1925 to the present. Through archival images and stories, guests revisited the organization’s hu - manitarian missions, cultural preservation efforts, and advocacy for Ukraine — work that has spanned continents and generations.
