“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2009 19 UNWLA Branch 95 Outreach: One River , Many Streams Folk Festival On Saturday, October 3, 2009, UNWLA Branch 95 of Poughkeepsie, New York, participated in the Dutchess County Arts Council, “One River, Many Streams Folk Festival” at Wayras Park. Held in Poughkeepsie, the event coincided with the opening of the Walkway over the Hudson. The Walkway over the Hudson connects Dutchess County with Ulster County over the Hudson River. In many ways, the bridge symbolizes the union of forces of natu re: earth, air, water, and fire. Crossing the Hudson by foot is clearly an adventure. The bridge is 6,767 feet long (about 1.25 miles) and 35 wide at the center. It is 212 feet above the water and connects to 27 miles of rail trails, offering the biker, ro llerblader, or walker an unprecedented opportunity to recreate in the wondrous landscape of the Hudson Valley. The day’s events included a parade over the Walkway, a ceremonial ribbon - cutting by Governor Patterson of New York, rides on Pete Seegar’s Hudson River Sloop, Clearwater, and an opportu nity to watch various boats passing in the Hudson near the park. Craft instruction UNWLA Branch 95 members continued their tradition of community outreach to educate the local communities about Ukrainian cultu re. Branch 95 held hands - on presentations of oberehy, or talismen/charms for the home, and displayed traditional embroidery, pysanky and traditional folk costumes of various regions of Ukraine throughout various centuries. Hands - on activities in the crafts tent included oberehy making, pysanky coloring, and traditional costume and embroidery coloring. The Kerhonkson Ukrainian Dancers, under the direction of Branch 95 member Elaine Oprysko and her children, Andrew and Maria, presented traditional Ukrainian dances, including Choboty, Hrechanyky, Metelichia, Zhuravel, Hutsulka, Kolomeyka, and Vinochok. The dance group holds practice at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Kerhonkson, New York. Craft exhibit Other local cultural organizations we re represented at the Folk Festival as well, including the Mid - Hudson Japanese Community, the Pough keepsie Mexican Community, the Mid - Hudson Chinese Community Association and the Kanthan Chaptlapalli Dancers — traditional South Asian Dancers. Dutchess Coun ty Arts Council Folklorist Polly Adema worked tirelessly to bring about the day’s stage and craft events and has worked hand - in - hand with UNWLA Branch 95 on several other events focusing on community outreach and pro - motion of awareness of cultural traditi ons such as ours. Eva Panchyshyn , UNWLA Branch 95 president
