“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2009 15 THE GREATEST GIFT FOR THIS HOLIDAY SEASON by Ihor Magun , M.D., F.A.C.P. Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. It is a time express appreciation for all the wonderful things our lives hold. A time to ponder about what is really is important in our lives. A time to give. But with the hectic lifestyles most of us ha ve and the hectic preparations for the holidays, it is sometimes easy to forget the true spirit of Christmas. So just for a moment, take away all the tinsel, lights and decorations. Take a good look at yourself and your life, and you will come to the reali zation that the g reatest gift you can give or receive dos not come in a package with pretty paper and ribbons. It is a gift that is centered in yourself. This Christmas season, if you really want to feel better about yourself, begin with an investment in a healthier and happier lifestyle. Becoming emotionally charged about being more health conscious will not only benefit you, but your enthusiasm will spill over to others. So will filling your free time with relaxing, socializing, exercising, or pursuing hobbies. Also take time to recognize and appreciate loved ones and friends. Acknowledge their wonderful traits. Show your appreciation. Surprise yourself by taking the time to learn something about someone you think you know well. Let others see something new about you. Spend quality time with those you care about. And do it with sincerity. Remember that life is a stage on which powerful dreams play themselves out. Some of those dreams are filled with hope; others are filled with problems and concern. Make time to talk about these things with others. Talking about problems, sharing advice, and expressing concern can be a calming mechanism. Do one good deed for someone daily. Recognize that doing so will have a “ripple effect,” like throwing a stone into wa ter. It can beget more good deeds. Call someone who is not feeling well or has had some bad luck in life. You will both end up feeling better. Look back. Remember someone who has made a difference in your life and thank that person. Acknowledging kindness or generosity in others is a wonderful gift idea and your words will be much appreciated. Look ahead. What will the next pages or chapters of your life bring? Plan wisely and make certain that those pages and chapters include your gift of volunteering. Finally, remember that life is filled with many blessings. Be grateful for who you are and what you have. Enjoy it, share it, and nurture it. Editor’s Note We would like to thank all of the authors and artists whose work has been featured in Our Life during 2009. Your columns, artwork, stories, poems, photographs, and articles have enriched our magazine, and it has been an honor and a pleasure to work with you.
