14 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2009 warm greetings in person, as both attended and participated in the Board meeting. Greetings from Lilia Hryhorowych, President of Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine, and Olya Pastushenko, President of the Lviv Okruha of SUU, were shared. UNWLA area branches were invited to join the Board for Saturday’s luncheon, during which UNWLA Education Chair Christine Shwed was awarded the Eva Stashkiv Fund award for her work with the UNWLA’s svitlychky and other e ducational endeavors. A slide presentation of the summer’s trip to Ukraine by President Marianna Zajac, Corresponding Secretary Daria Drozdovska, and Member at Large Vera Kushnir was shown at this luncheon. The plans and goals set forth by the National Boa rd one year ago (see October/November 2008 issue of Our Life ) have moved forward, and I would like to touch on a few main points that reflect this progress. Feedback on changes made with Our Life has been positive — its content assessed as more relevant, the format more reader friendly. The invitation to our Ukrainian American women artists to submit their artwork for the OL cover has spurred much interest, and we welcome and applaud all submissions. We must admit there have been a few controversies about an occasional article or cover, but the most important fact is that OL is being read and discussed! As I wrote a year ago, we welcome reader input and encourage you to e - mail ( unwla@unwla.org ) or write to UNWLA headquarters. The UNWLA’s “Retention and Recruit ment Campaign” materials have been shared with Regional Council Presidents and mailed to those requesting copies. Our Vice President for Organizational matters, our Acting Liaison for Branches - at - Large, as well as our Member - at - Large Chairwoman have focuse d on communication with all levels of membership. A positive sign is the formation of Branch 131 (New Jersey) and Branch 132 (Detroit) during 2009. In addition, we soon hope to see a UNWLA branch in North Dakota. Support for new branches is extremely impor tant and a handbook to assist new branches or prospective branches will be compiled in the coming year. While our new webmaster’s presentation last October proposed a website upgrade, the results far exceed what was initially discussed. In fact, we can lab el the work the webmaster and her committee have executed this past year a transformation! Besides posting UNWLA background and program information, the website now includes current event announcements and short articles, which are integrated into the webs ite within a few days of their receipt. Our webmaster encourages UNWLA members to contribute website content, the quickest and most efficient way to share news and ideas with each other. In her report, UNWLA Social Welfare Committee Chair offered a detaile d presentation of the new initiative “Assistance and Caring for the Elderly.” Our Regional Council presidents have been asked to coordinate assistance to assigned nursing homes in Ukraine. In an effort to encourage more communication between the Regional C ouncil boards and each branch within a given council, this project has been decentralized. After numerous questions were asked and answered, the project was accepted with interest and excitement. The National Board Social Welfare Chair will, of course, be available to answer questions and provide advice to our Regional Councils, and we will be keeping our readers abreast of the details as the project moves forward at the beginning of 2010. All other National Board members presented reports, providing an ove rview of work accomplished during the past year as well as plans for the coming year. I thank each and every member of the National Board for the part she played in this successful year. It has been a pleasure to work with this wonderful group of women, an d the upbeat, positive atmosphere of our meeting confirmed everyone’s cooperation in our joint efforts. On the eve of our organization’s 85 th anniversary, let us celebrate our accomplishments! ___ ______________________________ _________________ We share wi th readers the sad news that Iryna Senyk, poet and dissident, passed away in Ukraine on October 25. Senyk, who spent 34 years of her life in concentration camps or in exile (see “ Не забуваймо нашої Героїні Світу – Ірини Сеник ” in О L Oct/Nov 2008, p.12), worked closely with Soyuz Ukrainok and with Atena Pashko after the proclamation of Ukraine’s independence. She first visited the United States in 1990 and attended UNWLA’s XXII Conv ention in Detroit where she was greeted with both flowers and tears. We bow our heads to this exemplary Ukrainian heroine. May she rest in peace. Marianna Zajac, UNWLA President Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році . A рхів C У A - Ню Йорк , Н . Й . C Ш A.
