“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2009 17 talented young people in the hromada , and an amusing cartoon about a still ubiquitous hromada tradition — the Christmas Bazaar . The cartoo n caption reads “Competing to preserve traditions and raise funds . ” T he illustration shows three posters from three different UNWLA branches inviting people to three bazaars held at the same time at the same location. In 1989, Ukraine was experiencing per e - stroika, and the focus of OL in the December issue of this year shifts again, specifically to honor dissidents, activists, and those whose lives and professional or creative work had suffered under the Soviet regime of previous decades. There is a brief biography of Viacheslav Chornovil , a lengthy report about a UNWLA event featuring Ivan Svitlychny, and an article (in Ukrainian and English translation ) about artist Ivan Marchuk, “one of the most important members of the noncomformist art movement in Ukra ine during the 1960s and 1980s . ” Before perestroika , Marchuk and his art had been deemed subversive by the authorities and by the officially sanctioned Ukrainian Artists Union. The issue also includes a short item by then Education Chairwoman and now Archi ves Chairwoman Ol g a Trytyak — a brief description of her visit with sculp - tor/ethnographer Ivan Honchar at his apartment - based museum in Kyiv . During the visit, Mrs. Trytyak presented Mr. Honchar with an issue of OL in which his life and work had been feature d. . In the December 1999 issue, Our Life continues to accommodate s this transoceanic blend of “here and there” and “them and us . ” U kraine, now an independent country, is represented artistically in a n article about composer Kos - Anatolsky and is represented politically in reports by President Iryna Kurowyckyj and Vice President Motria Sloiewsky about meetings with Anton Buteyko, Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States, and meetings with representative of Ukraine’s Permanent Mission to the UN Security Cou n c il. The “here” and “us” is just as amply represented by the UNWLA Convention report of Honorary President Anna Krawczuk . Mrs. Krawczuk also contributed a bio - graphical Christmas story for the issue . In the story, a child in war - torn Germany stops believin g in St. Nicholas . Many years later, the woman she becomes, while convalescing in a hospital in New Jersey, dis covers that she believes again. Full circle. Our own story continues to evolve. One hopes that the current issue of Our Life adds something to a tale begun 65 years ago and that it reveals a little about who we are and what we may yet become.
