A Day of Humor and Satire in Phoenix, Arizona by Irena Schubyn The extraordinary ladies of UNWLA Branch Phoenix and their extraordinary hats. On November 12, 2004, UNWLA's Phoenix Branch entertained luncheon guests at a "Day of Humor and Satire." The event was organized and directed by Mrs. Olha Slywka; a delicious lunch was prepared by Mrs. Marilyn Myhajliw and Mrs. Rosa Tymczyna. The first half of the show featured hair styles. While UNWLA members modeled coiffures and matching outfits, Mrs. Slywka provided humor ous narrative descriptions of the quirks and charac teristics of "the woman behind the hairstyle." Among these were the get-out-of-bed hair (with pa jamas to match), the up-do nest (eggs included, of course), a swinging pony tail, hobo hair (no mainte nance or comb required), the infamous З-inch tight curly perm (matched by a skirt bottom "acciden tally" tucked into waist high nylons), the no hassle braid (for our patriot), the half-face do (for those who reveal only half of themselves), and the very cool Marge Simpson do. Guests laughed and chuck led at the parade of curious ladies while the partici pants had a wonderful time modeling their hairdos and wardrobes and playacting various roles and per sonalities. The event also featured a performance by Zenon and Leelya Bilyk and their grandson Maxim. Mrs. Valentina Lishchuk recited a satirical poem she had written about the pre-election economic and political situation in Ukraine. The second half of the show featured a dis play of hats provided by Mrs. Slywka. The hats were playful and sophisticated. Some ladies wore matching gloves and others wore flirtatious boas. Some seemed ready for afternoon tea with the Queen Mother and others looked like they were off to the market to sell honey and eggs. An umbrella adorned one hat, a rabbit reportedly nestled in a "magical" hat, and there was a surprise visit from the "Beverly Hill Billies." All of the UNWLA ladies looked splendid and the event was enjoyed by guests and partici pants alike. The Day of Humor and Satire showed that there is a little girl in all of us that enjoys play ing dress-up and pretend. From the editor.
