On February 6, 2005, Bishop Basil Losten of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Stamford and Arch bishop Antony of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the United States, assisted by numerous clergy, blessed the new building in a special ceremony attended by distinguished guests, UNWLA members, patrons of the museum, and many other individuals. Among the honored guests were representatives of the Ukrainian government. As president of the organization that founded this institution, I was invited to speak on behalf of our membership. In my speech, I emphasized the contribution of UNWLA members who have supported the mu seum over the years and that the museum's first president was Alexandra Riznyk, a UNWLA member. A special word of appreciation was reserved for UNWLA member Olha Hnateyko, current president of the Ukrainian Mu seum’s board of trustees, for it was during her presidency that the construction of the new building began and ended. On behalf of the UNWLA, I also thanked the Members of the Board, the museum's past and present presidents, and other individuals who had helped to build on the vision of the past. We and they have trans formed a modest collection that began on two floors of an East Village building into a world class museum with a an exceptional collection and a state of the art building to house it. Among those most worthy of praise are museum director Maria Shust, administrator Daria Bayko, and architect George Sawicki, whose unique design now graces the landscape of Manhattan like a jewel. But it is important to remind our members that the UNWLA of today, just like the UNWLA of our predecessors, does not leave a project unfinished. While we can be proud of what we have accomplished, our obligations to the Museum did not end when the new building was blessed There is much that remains to be done and the Museum continues to need our assistance. In closing my speech at the blessing ceremony, I bor rowed the motto of Orange Revolution. “We are many. We cannot be defeated.” These are words that will serve us—and the Ukrainian Museum—well in the years to come.
