The National Council of Women of the United States presented its 1990 coveted Woman of Coscience Award to Julia Hines Mabus, Chair of the Mississippi Literacy Coalition and the Governor’s Task Force on Child Care, as well as a founding trustee of the Mississippi Literacy Foundation. The recipient, a very charming and gra cious young woman is also the First Lady of the State of Mississippi. Mrs. Mabus received the Award “for her leadership in creating and activating a public commit ment to assure literacy for adults in Mississippi; for establishing the first Governor’s Office for Literacy to ensure priority status for this effort; for coordinating public and private efforts in welfare reform, educational reform and economic development.” The award ceremony was held on October 3 at the Time and Life Building in New York City. Alice Stover Pickering, wife of the Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations and Joyce Dinkins, wife of the Mayor of New York City were among the honored guests who were introduced to the audience by Claire Friedland, President of NCW. The Woman of Conscience Committee Chair and Mistress of Ceremo nies was Iryna Kurowyckyj. The Woman of Conscience award was instituted in 1963 by NCW in order to honor an American woman who, in the opinion of a panel of judges, is an innovator and a leader, and who is dedicated to improving the quality of life in our world. The first distinguished recip ient of the award was Rachel Carson whose remarkable book S ile n t S p rin g awakened the American public to modern civilization’s abuse of our natural environment. In 1975 anthropologist Margaret Mead received the award. It is fair to say that hardly anyone went through high school without reading C o m in g o f A g e in S am oa . Among other celebrated names on the list are Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Nancy Hanks and Frances Lehman Loeb. The Woman of Conscience Award ceremony was conducted with an easy elegance in an atmosphere of relaxed friendliness which is the hallmark of NCW. The program featured several clips from “Stanley and Iris,” a film dealing with the problem of illiteracy in an adult relationship. The film did much to bring home the heartbreak, feeling of hopelessness, alienation and anger experienced by an illiterate individual in our society. Each of the speakers during the ceremony, including the Award recipient, Julia Hines Mabus, emphasized the importance of the literacy programs operating on local, 18 ’НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ", ГРУДЕНЬ 1990 Ірина Куровицька і жінка майора міста Нью-Йорку Джойс Дінкінс. iryna Kurowyckyj and Joyce Dinkins, wife of the Mayor of NYC.
