C., an d on Ju n e 2 9-July 1st th e X III C onvention of th e U k ra in ia n N a tio n a l W om en’s L eague o f A m erica, Inc., took place in P h ilad elp h ia, P a. A s a n a sso ciated m em b er of th e G FW C , o u r o rg an iz a tio n w as in v ited , an d se n t its re p re s e n ta tiv e. T h e re fo re a com parison is n o t only possible b u t a w elcom e n ecessity . L iv in g in th e sam e c o u n try an d striv in g fo r sim ila r goals could w e n o t h av e sim ila r p ro je c ts ? T h e p ro g ra m of th e A n n u al M eetin g in W a sh in g to n w as im p re ssiv e . F o r th is p u rp o se con feren ces w ere held in in B razil, A rg e n tin a , Chile, and V enezuela, com bined w ith sem i n a rs fo r stu d y in g of th e social needs of th e c o u n try . In th is com m on end eavo r o b jectiv es w ere a ssig n ed to fo s te r m u tu a l u n d e rsta n d in g an d to help w ith th e m o st c ritic al problem s. T he m o st s trik in g achiev e m e n t in th is field w as th e actio n “ D ollars fo r S ch o lars.” I t con cerned th e c u ltu ra l ex ch an g e be tw een co u n trie s of th e W e ste rn H em isp h ere. D u rin g th e f ir s t y e a r th is actio n g a th e re d $57,- 738.00; an d enabled th e G FW C to c re a te 25 sc h o la rsh ip s fo r g irl stu d e n ts fro m L a tin A m erica. To help u n d erp riv ile g e d people, a w i de actio n of C A R E food p a r cels w as laun ched . T he a tte n tio n G FW C gave to help th e P eace C orps actio n b ro u g h t a special reco g n itio n fro m P re sid e n t K en nedy. T h is im p o sin g re c o rd in d icates th e tre m e n d o u s p ro g re ss th e A m erican w om an m ad e in m an y w ays. She becam e n o t only an im p o rta n t fa c to r in h e r own c o u n try ’s public life b u t sh e be- becam e m o re aw a re o f th e U n it ed S ta te s p o sitio n in th e fre e w o rld ; an d trie d h a rd to s tre n g th e n an d fo s te r it th ro u g h h e r ow n m ean s. T he C onvention of th e U k ra in ia n N a tio n a l W om en’s L eag u e of A m erica, Inc., ca n n o t c e rta in ly be com pared as to th e e x te n t of its ach iev em en ts. B u t th e s p irit an d devotion of th e le a d ers an d d eleg ates, th e ideas m ov ing it a re of th e sam e s tre n g th and value. I t m ay d iffe r to som e ex te n t. A nd th is is w h a t w e a re e a g er to learn . T he m o st ab so rb in g in te re s t of U k ra in ia n w om en is in th e field of educatio n. T he re a rin g of ch ild ren th ro u g h th e U k ra in ia n c o m m u n ity ; th e in flu ence of old tr a d itio n s ; th e re sp o n sib ility to th e old c o u n tr y ; an d th e a t ta c h m e n t to th e new c o u n try w ere to pics of lively discussion. T he second field of in te re s t w as th e w elfare p ro g ra m . T h e new ly se ttle d c o m m u n ity h a s m an y pro blem s to solve as it h a s m an y lonely old p erso n s, b ro k en fa m i lies an d o rp h an ed child ren . T he experience o f v o lu n ta ry w o rk ers an d th e co operation w ith public w e lfare in s titu tio n s w ere also ta k e n in to co n sid eratio n . T he public re la tio n s p ro g ra m w as n o t stre sse d too m u ch al th o u g h th e re co rd show ed c er ta in ach iev em en ts. T h e U N W L A R egional C ouncils a re in p e rm a n e n t c o n ta c t w ith In te rn a tio n a l I n s titu te s ; an d a re m em b ers of th e G en eral F e d e ra tio n in P h ila delphia, D e tro it an d C hicago. T h e re fo re in th e se an d o th e r cities th e y ta k e p a r t in d iffe re n t p ro g ra m s an d su p p o rt com m on actions. One ite m of im p o rta n c e w as stre sse d a t th is C onvention. T h e re w ere m o re A m erican -b o rn deleg ates o f U k ra in ia n d e sc e n t; an d th e ir voice w as ta k e n in to co n sid eratio n . T h ey e x p ressed a w ish fo r m o re E n g lish p a g es in th e m ag azin e O U R L I F E ; an d m o re E n g lish b u lle tin s an d le t te rs . T h e ir p resen ce w as en co u r a g in g an d p ro m isin g . I t w as ob vious th a t m a n y m o re of th e m w ere p re p a re d to jo in in g th e U k ra in ia n N a tio n a l W om en’s L eag ue, w h en th e y d esire to do so. T h is m ean s p ro g re ss. I t will n o t only stre n g th e n ou r o rg a n i zatio n th ro u g h th e in cre a se of m em b ers an d B ra n c h e s: it w ill enable u s to fo s te r an d w iden o u r public re la tio n s p ro g ra m in m an y w ays.
