“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИПЕНЬ-СЕРПЕНЬ 2016 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 33 Summer Health and Beauty Tips by IHOR MAGUN, M.D., F.A.C.P. A season revered by all age groups, summer is also a time for baring body parts that are strategically covered and protected during other seasons of the year. Ironically, these body parts may have been neglected during those other seasons and did not receive the attention they deserved. Here are a few tips to restore them and look your radiant best. Nails can use some damage control because they often become soft, weak, and brittle because of re- peated use of nail color and nail polish remover. One recommendation is to invest in a nail polish remover that contains both acetone and botanical oils. These are gentler than chemicals used in most nail polish and polish removal formulas and do not cost much more. It is also good to take a two to three day hiatus between nail polish applications at least once a month. Get into the habit of dabbing a drop of moisturizer (night time face cream is ac- ceptable) on each finger and massaging it into your nails and cuticles nightly. If your nails are particu- larly weak, supplement the moisturizer treatment with a daily dose of over-the-counter Vitamin B complex. Dermanail nail conditioner is a good choice. It is a bit pricey, but it works well if applied daily. Skin Start improving your skin by gently scrub- bing away dead cells with a loofah sponge or body scrub while showering. This eliminates the rough scaly layer of skin and should be done three times a week. Try applying self-tanner to give your skin a light glow. Jergens Natural Glow daily moistur- izer/bronzer is an excellent choice because it pro- vides moisture and great color but has no odor. And speaking of good choices, remember that working on that glowing skin appearance provides a perfect opportunity to do a whole body check for any suspicious skin lesions. Do this routinely so you can address anything suspicious in a timely manner. If something looks or feels wrong or sus- picious, it is a good idea to have it professionally checked, the sooner the better. When checking your skin, remember the basic alphabet code for skin assessing lesions: A is for Asymmetry— normal pigment should be symmetrical; if you draw a line down the middle, it should be identical. B is for Border— the border should be smooth, not irregular. C is for Color —skin color should be uniform and there should be no color variations. D is for Diameter— any lesion greater than the size of a pencil point should be evaluat- ed. There are some exceptions; lesions you have had all your life and have never changed in size are fine. E is for Evolving— any visible change should be checked out. For this reason, taking a cell phone photo of a lesion is a great idea because you can compare any change to what you see on the photo. Any questionable lesion should be re- ferred to a physician as soon as possible. Shaving tips Hair is softer after showering and that is the time to apply a hydrating body wash or shaving gel. Using soap is not advisable because it dries skin. If possible, use a razor that has four to five blades with a moisturizing strip. It is also rec- ommended to sterilize your blade with rubbing al- cohol before use. This simple procedure prevents those unsightly red bumps. Eyes Take extra protection around the eyes. Eye- lid skin is one of the first areas to show signs of ag- ing and environmental damage. Hypoallergenic eye creams work very well and are less likely to cause irritation than other creams. Always use cau- tion when removing eye makeup. Choose a makeup remover that melts mascara off like a cleansing oil. Face Washing your face at night should be a daily routine all year long. The best product for this is a soap-free cleanser. Also remember to apply broad spectrum Ultra Violet protection in the morning. Make sure the product protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Check expiration dates and always use a product that has an SPF of 30 or greater. Positive People and Positive Attitude Research shows that you manage stress and live longer if you have healthy relationships. Go for it and have a fantastic summer looking and feeling your best!
