“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИПЕНЬ-СЕРПЕНЬ 2016 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 29 BRANCH 96 SPONSORS PRESENTATION OF COMPELLING NOVEL by Marie Zarycky Cherviovskiy, Branch 96 Archivist Author Alex Tarnavsky at book presentation On Friday, April 8, 2016, the Warren Civic Center Library became the venue for the presentation of a thrilling new novel Masters of Deceit by local writer Alex Tarnavsky. Mr. Tarnavsky spent 25 years researching the assassination of John F. Ken- nedy before writing his 658-page fictionalized ac- count of the mysteries surrounding the tragic event. A husband, father, grandfather, and retired engineer, the author is a well-known member of our southeastern Michigan Ukrainian American community. He is also the author of a recently pub- lished book titled The Quadruple Play . As sponsors of the book presentation, Branch 96 of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America along with the Lypeckyj family, decided to host the event at the Warren Civic Cen- ter Library as a way to maximize exposure to an audience comprising the general public as well as members of the local Ukrainian community. This proved to be a good strategy as the evening event drew an audience of more than one hundred peo- ple. Branch 96 President Catherine Kizyma opened the presentation by welcoming attendees and introducing the author. In her introduction, she reminisced about sitting in a high school class- room on November 22, 1963, when the announce- ment came over the intercom that President John F. Kennedy had been shot in Dallas, Texas. She noted that the memory of this event has somehow become entrenched in each of our psyches; most of us can instantly recall our whereabouts during that unbelievable time in American history. But she ex- plained that this book is more than just about our past history; it is also a lesson for future genera- tions to safeguard against absolute power, espe- cially in the hands of unscrupulous leaders. Author Alex Tarnavsky began his presen- tation by recalling his own whereabouts on that fateful November day. He had just returned from Wayne State University and was welcoming three young girls into his home for piano lessons when he heard the tragic news that started his lengthy quest for answers about the masterminds of this assassination. The author explained how he got started on this subject matter and what motivated him throughout the years to continue until the completion of his well-researched and compelling novel, which includes real-life characters of that period and reenacts for the reader the unthinkable and treacherous act perpetrated by individuals in positions of power and authority—not in a third world country, but right here, in the greatest coun- try in the world. At the conclusion of the author’s presenta- tion, the president of Branch 96 thanked him for writing this book and for replaying for readers the many events, issues, and people that captured our attention at that tragic time, noting that all of these make for a great read and provide a much better understanding of the assassination. She also ex- pressed her gratitude to the other members of the event’s planning committee (Christine Lypeckyj, Vera Andrushkiw, Christine Juzych, Lada Prokop, and Marta Kwitkowsky) for their well-executed work in advertising the event. The president then acknowledged the Warren Civic Center Library head Oksana Urban and event coordinator Jen- nifer Lund, who designed the flyer and made the facility available to us. Heartfelt gratitude was also extended to all the members of Branch 96 who made this event even more memorable by planning and hosting a wonderful reception for everyone to enjoy while socializing with the author.
