Марія Лисобей, наша місцева поетка написала дуже зворушливу поезію для Надії, яка була прочитана в обидвох мовах Танею Браун і Оксаною Пясецькою. Закінчується вірш словами: «Герої такі додають нам наснаги І вчать у бою набиратись відваги. Від України уклін Вам земний. Рідного краю Ви ангел святий». Тріо Максимович в складі Дани Максимович Васькевич, Анни Лотоцької і Карин Вілк з глибоким відчуттям заспівали дві пісні, присвячені Надії: "Oй, у лузі червона калина" і "O, Україно, о люба ненько". Отець Андрій Романків порадив, як підтримати Надю і її сім’ю. Оксана Пясецька. NADIYA SAVCHENKO HONORED BY BRANCH 17 AND MIAMI COMMUNITY by Oksana Piaseckyj On Sunday, February 28, 2016, Branch 17 hosted an event honoring Nadiya Savchenko, Ukraine’s heroine of the day who has endured for almost two years an inhumane imprisonment on trumped up charges that had long been refuted and disproved by her legal team. Held at Miami’s Ukrainian Catholic Church Hall, the program was presented in Ukrainian and English to accommodate a diverse audience that included guests fluent in Ukrainian as well as third generation Ukrainian Americans born in the United States who do not speak Ukrainian. Father Andrij Romankiv, pastor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, opened the program with a prayer and brief introductory remarks on the heroism of Nadiya Savchenko. Our newly elected branch president Olha Sperkacz welcomed everyone who came to join our event in support of Nadiya. Camilla Huk Maisier spoke in English, extolling Nadiya’s heroic qualities, her upbringing, and her devotion to Ukraine’s freedom. She compared the young Ukrainian pilot to other Ukrainian heroines, such as Nadia Svitlychna and Iryna Senyk, victims of Soviet repressions in the years before Ukraine proclaimed its independence. Oksana Piaseckyj spoke in Ukrainian, citing the awards that Nadiya Savchenko has received for her remarkable qualities, her determination to help Ukraine in her struggle against Russia, and how she has become a role model for all young Ukrainians. Maria Lysobey, our poet in residence in the Miami community, wrote a very moving poem to Nadiya Savchenko, which was read in English by Tania Brown and in Ukrainian by Oksana Piaseckyj. The Trio Maksymowich (Donna Waskiewicz Maksymowich, Anna Lotocky, and Karyn Wilk) sang two inspirational songs dedicated to Nadiya: “Oj U Luzi, Chervona Kalyna” (The Red Guelder-rose Bowed in the Meadow) and “O Ukrajino, O Luba Nenjko” (Oh Ukraine, Oh Beloved Mother). Father Andrij Romankiv concluded the program with his homage to Nadia Savchenko for all that she represents and suggested how to support her and her family. Editor’s Note: We received this article shortly before hearing glad tidings from Ukraine about Nadiya Savchenko’s release from prison. This article (and its Ukrainian-language counterpart) attests to the Ukrain- ian diaspora’s support for the young Ukrainian heroine and to the UNWLA’s endeavors to support her and honor her throughout her long ordeal.
