“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ТРАВЕНЬ 2015 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 17 “I haven't witnessed a battle yet, but I have seen its victims and those exhausted by the struggle—some of them wallow under fenc- es, while others lie drenched in dirty water in the middle of the street...” In a short while, a second report flew in: “There is some kind of danger—faces are anx- ious. The city will definitely be under siege. Huge amounts of bread, hats, boots, ties, and bottles of alcohol are being procured and stored.” In another little while, there was a third report: “It's clear—they're preparing for battle. Knives are being sharpened, and young ladies are concealing stilettos in their hair.” And then, there was a fourth report: “The level of activity is increasing. People are walking about in alarm. I would say that the Christians are fearing a catastrophe, but it is not appropriate to use the word 'catastrophe' with respect to knights, fighters for an ideal...” The fifth report: “The enemy must be close by; the Christians, sweaty, agitated, and upset, are running around threateningly. They're shoving one another and continually running to and fro, some barefoot, and some in boots. They have huge parcels under their arms—these must contain their weapons. There's a great outcry and much cursing—it must be against the enemy. Children are cry- ing—it may be that they are the victims. Ani- mals are bawling.” The sixth report: “The activity increases hourly. I don't see the enemy, but the Chris- tians must see them, because their eyes are fierce, their nerves are taut. The most demon- strative among them are clenching their fists and preparing to do battle. They are hurriedly learning how to box—I saw two respectable women conducting such a lesson, and hundreds of pupils looked on without taking their eyes off them...” The seventh report: “The enemy must be on its way — there's an evil odor in the air, and the level of activity is increasing, intensify- ing...” The eighth report: “There's the smell of sizzling blood. It's night. I can't see anything, but I can hear people racing about, horses gal- loping, and there is so much activity and such determination, that the final battle must be at hand.” The ninth report flew in at dawn. “The struggle has ended—the Christians were victo- rious. The last battle took place in their homes. All the enemies of Christ's ideals—various fowl and four-legged animals—have been slain. Most of them are small, but their numbers are count- less. There are several of them for every family of Christ's followers, and it goes without saying that the struggle was difficult. Now, all the foes have been slaughtered, killed, and, like trophies of a glorious victory, they lie preserved and adorned with flowers in Christians' parlors.” “Such a magnificent victory over the foes of truth immediately altered the general mood of the Knights of the Holy Truth, whose conviction that they have done their great Christian duty is reflected in all the minutiae of their lives.” “Candles and lamps are lit everywhere, and bells ring without ceasing.” “Throngs of Christians, dressed in holi- day attire and with cheerful songs on their lips, walk about and greet each other with kisses, exclaiming: ‘Christ is risen!’” English translation by Roma Franko; edited by Sonia Morris Reprinted with permission from In the Dark of the Night: Selected Prose Fiction by Dniprova Chayka and Lyubov Yanovska.
