10 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2014 LOOKING THROUGH THE CONVENTION BOOK... Upon opening the Convention Book of the XXX UNWLA Convention, one finds Lesya Ukrainka’s poem “On Shevchenko’s Anniversary,” for 2014 is the year when Ukrainians all over the world celebrate the Bicentennial of Ukraine’s greatest poet, artist, and patriot, Taras Shevchen- ko. This year’s Convention Book is dedicated to this historic occasion. The poem is followed by Dr. Natalia Pa- zuniak’s article “Our Poet,” which explains the vital importance of Shevchenko and his works, his folk roots, his strong Ukrainian spirit, his prophetic genius, his deep understanding of his nation’s wounds and needs, and his ability to chart for his nation a historical path out of foreign enslavement to freedom. In his mystery play “The Great Vault,” Shevchenko prophesied that the strength of the Ukrainian people was “not in gold or hetman’s pre- cious stones, nor in the riches of Ukraine’s fertile soil, as greedy Moscow thought, but rather in the depths of Ukraine’s living, unyielding spirit...” It is symbolic that Ukraine’s spirit awak- ened again—on the Maidan—around Shevchenko’s 200th anniversary. Shevchenko’s poetic lines and slogans were there among the people on the Mai- dan giving strength and courage to our present-day fighters for Ukraine’s liberation from a contempo- rary form of enslavement. Dr. Tamara Hundorova’s article which fol- lows is also dedicated to Shevchenko’s anniversary. “Taras Shevchenko as a Ukrainian Feminist” in- troduces the reader to the female characters in the prose works by Shevchenko. “It was the prose that uncovered Shevchenko’s views on many worldwide issues—upbringing, education, national conscious- ness, relationships between parents and children, and the plight of women,” concludes the author. This year our organization marks the 70th anniversary of its official publication, Our Life . The Convention Book of the XXX Convention is also dedicated to this important date. The 70-year long history of the magazine is detailed in the Convention Book article by Our Life ’s Editor-in-Chief Lidia Slysh. The Convention Book includes numerous greetings received from clergy, Ukrainian diplo- matic corps, financial institutions, Ukrainian- American political and community organizations as well as individuals. The greetings testify to the fact that the UNWLA’s work throughout its 89 years of existence has been held in high esteem. They express the gratitude of Ukrainians all over the world for everything that the Soyuzianky have been doing for their nation and communities. All members of the National Board have submitted detailed reports on their work in the past three years. It is evident that each member strove to fulfill her duties with utmost care and great sense of responsibility towards those who had elected her to a leadership position. The re- ports by UNWLA Regional Councils and Branches that capture the great enthusiasm of Soyuzianky in the UNWLA’s most recent project of helping the Maidan are especially interesting to read. Thanks to the diligent work by each Soyuzianka and all of them together, our organization has the respect of the Ukrainian communities not only in the United States, but also worldwide. The Convention Book was prepared for publication thanks to the collective efforts by a team of individuals led by UNWLA President Ma- rianna Zajac (Executive Committee representative) and Convention Book Committee Chair Ulana Zinych, UNWLA 1st Vice-President. The Commit- tee included Treasurer Oxana Farion, Secretary Zoriana Haftkowycz, and members Oksana Dats and Natalia Sonevytska. Technical assistance was provided by Mykola Darmochwal. Lidia Slysh served as Ukrainian-language editor and Olesia Wallo as English-language editor. Translations were done by Iryna Koshulap. Christine Izak de- signed the cover. The Convention Book was print- ed by Computoprint Corp., owner Maria Duplak. The Convention Book is available for pur- chase at the UNWLA office.
