“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЖОВТЕНЬ 2011 19 the events and, as a result, in UNWLA as a major playe r from the diaspora. On the evening of the 17 th , a farewell banquet was held at the conclusion of the European Congress. At this event, it was our great pleasure to be able to spend some time with the first and former National President of the renewed Ukra inian Women’s League of Ukraine and highly respected dissident, Atena Pashko. 08/18/2011 Thursday This was the day of the formal opening for the World Forum of Ukrainian Women (it included SFUZHO member organizations as well as women’s democratic organiz ations of Ukraine.) One of the opening speeches was delivered by President of the Ukrainian Women’s League of Ukraine and Deputy of Parliament, Ms. Lilia Hryhorovych. UNWLA Vice President Ulana Zinych participated in the roundtable entitled “Re - presenta t ion of Ukrainian women’s organi - zations in the international milieu – their function and assignments.” Ms . Zinych presented a thorough report of UNWLA’s inroads in such organizations and what it has been able to accomplish as a result of its participation in the international arena. The topics of other roundtables held on the 18 th were: “The woman in the Ukrainian village today and her battle with poverty”; “Investing in the country’s future by building up the national education in Ukraine”; and “Con - solidating the Ukrainian women’s organizations in Ukraine and worldwide in order to protect the rights and freedoms of the Ukrainian woman.” On the 18 th there also was a one - hour radio program focusing on the World Forum and Ukrainian women’s organization s and their issues worldwide. Participants included Rostyslava Fedak, Vice President of the Ukrainian Women’s League of Ukraine, Maria Finiw, President of the Association of Ukrainian Women in Great Britain, Dr. Oreslava Khomyk and myself. The discussion w as interactive and lively. In the afternoon, the roundtable format continued with the following topics: “Ukrainian women’s organizations as the protectorate of national identity” and “The Ukrainian women’s movement as a factor of women’s equality.” 08/19/ 2011 Friday The World Forum con - tinued with the presentation “In what direction is your organization headed? What issues are in your main focus?” The Vice President of the Ukrainian Women’s League of Ukraine, Rostyslava Fedak, and I replied to the questio ns posed. My answer was that, through the years, many of our projects have repeated themselves as we have always focused on the missions stated in our By - laws. However, we are adapting to the times and tailoring these projects to the present. Through the e fforts of Olya Pastushenko, a delegation from the celebratory group of “Soyuzanky,” formed to begin the celebrations of the 90 th /20 th anniversaries of the Ukrainian Women’s League of Ukraine, was invited to participate in a one - hour television talk show on Lviv Channel 12. Besides pani Olya and myself, the other speakers included Vera Koval’chyk, President of Women’s League of Evpatoria, Crimea, Alla Debeliuk, VP of the National Women’s League, and Hanna Papirnyk, President of the Lviv Oblast organization “Women’s Choice.” The topics covered ranged from the World Forum to the forthcoming celebrations to the life and adjustment of the “fourth - wave” Ukrainian women in the United States. Once again, many personal opinions surfaced and made for a lively discus sion and exchange of ideas. The 90 th anniversary celebrations of the Ukrainian Women’s League of Ukraine began on this day (and will continue and culminate in December in Kyiv). These first remembrances and celebrations, initiated by the Lviv Region, focus ed on the work of the 2,700 or so members who belong to this Region and covered the timeframe since the organization’s revival 20 years ago. The weekend began with an extensive exhibition and film focusing on the highlights of this Region’s work since 1991 . The event was held at the Museum of the History of Religion right in the City of Lviv. The variety and scope of the work of the Region is truly amazing and commendable. Congratulations! 08/20/11 Saturday The 90 th anniversary commemoration formally be gan as a parade along the Prospekt Svobody. Buses from the various “raiony” arrived; they were filled with proud and enthusiastic members boasting traditional garb from their regions. A gala concert was held at the Lviv Opera House.
