18 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЖОВТЕНЬ 2011 Medical Association of North America is funding Dr. Savchyn’s educational visit to Boston in September. UMANA will be invited to further support this collaboration by assisting with the educat ional facet of the project. Meeting Dr. Savchyn’s young patients and their accompanying mothers was a touching experience and reassured us about the necessity of our involvement. We also visited the home of Sabre - Svitlo, which has been supplying Ukrainians with books sent by the U.S. - based Sabre Foundation since 1990, opening avenues for distribution to public libraries and various educational and scholarly institutions across Ukraine. Substantial assistance has been given to Sabre - Svitlo by the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America and its branches. For many years, then executive board member at large, Lida Bilous, carried out the thankless task of collecting, coordinating, packing, and sending numerous containers of books w ith the help of members of the Ukrainian American community in Bridgeport, Conn. This year, the warehouse of Sabre - Svitlo was filled with textbooks ready to be delivered or mailed to academic institutions across Ukraine. It was interesting to note that al l the books were in English. This program continues to be of great educational assistance to the Ukrainian schools. 08/16/2011 Tuesday We had a meeting at the Ukrainian Catholic University with Deputy Director of Development, O lha Zarichynska. Pani Olha escorted us around the school, explaining both the curricula and the physical plant of the University. The reason for our visit was to look into the possibilities of and further direction for UNWLA’s proposed Gender/Women’s Studies Lecture ship. The discov ered details will be presented and discussed at the annual UNWLA National Board Meeting to be held on October 14 – 16 th . I participated in a radio interview at the Lviv Regional offices of the Ukrainian Women’s League of Ukraine. (Other participants included Olya Pastushenko, President of the Lviv Region, Zoriana Bilyk, former President of the Lviv Region, and Hanna Papirnyk, President of the Lviv Oblast organization “Women’s Choice.” ) The topic was the 90 th anniversary of the formation of the Ukrai nian Women’s League and the 20 th anniversary of its revival. UNWLA’s encouragement and support twenty years ago and its partnering projects were discussed. 08/17/2011 Wednesday We attended the European Congress of Ukrainian Women (which officially began on the 16th) led by Maria Finiw, President of the Association of Ukrainian Women in Great Britain, and held at the Lviv Polytechnic. The topics of the roundtables were as follows: “The successful integration of the Ukrainian minority in European cou ntries” – led by a representative of the Czech Republic; “The integration and prospects of the Ukrainian woman in European countries” – led by guests from Scandinavia; “What unites us? What differentiates us?” – chaired by delegates from France and Great B ritain. I read my report of UNWLA activities for the past calendar year, emphasizing the publication of “Candle in Remembrance” and my presentation at the United Nations on the commemoration of the 25 th anniversary of Chornobyl. I was interviewed by an in dependent correspondent Tetiana Kozyrieva of the daily newspaper “Den,” based in Lviv. The interview was arranged by Iryna Kliuchkovska, Director of the International Institute of Education, Culture and Relations with the Diaspora of the Lviv Poly technic. At the Lviv Mayor’s office, we met with Deputy Mayor, Marta Lytvyniuk, in order to familiarize the Lviv City Council with UNWLA activities, its partnership with the Women’s League of Ukraine, and to encourage city budget allotment for the much needed ren ovations and upgrading of the Lviv Hospital #8 Pediatric Burn Unit. This meeting was arranged by Olya Pastushenko, President of CY Lviv Region. Pani Olya is a humble and very sincere person who focuses on the good of the organization and giving its members all the credit they deserve. The visit with Ms. Lytvyniuk was successful – she was somewhat amazed at the intensity and amount of charitable work that has been carried out in Ukraine by UNWLA. Another impromptu radio interview outside the Mayor’s office was given to a local Lviv radio station. This year, because of the celebration of the 90 th anniversary of CYY, as well as the World Forum taking place in Lviv, there was a plethora of media interest in Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
