“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЖОВТЕНЬ 2011 17 SHARING THOUGHTS, VIEWS, & NEWS Every year during the month of August, the UNWLA President, accompanied by other Executive and/or National Board members, travels to attend the annual conferences of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations as well as the Ukrainian World Con gress. Why is this important? It is imperative that, as founding members of WFUWO, we share our annual accomplishments and our developing viewpoints with the leadership of WFUWO and also the member women’s organizations from around the world. UNWLA does no t sufficiently publicize the enormous work it does in almost all spheres of community life, both in the diaspora and in Ukraine. This exposure is vital for our organization to be appreciated for its contributions. It is equally important that we develop co ntact with WFUWO organization leaders and become aware of their accomplishments and challenges. By learning to understand their successes and difficulties, we can gain insight into our own. Countries of origin become irrelevant, since our basic desire to better the lives of Ukrainians, wherever they may be, through social welfare or cultural and educational endeavors, becomes crystalized and our bond evident. As a member of the UWC, UNWLA also reports on its many achievements to conference umbrella organiz ations, offering a snapshot of our contribution to the Ukrainian community in the United States. This year, I, First Vice President Ulana Zinych, newly elected VP of Public Relations, Lidia Bilous, and newly elected archivist Olya Drozdowycz travelled to U kraine for what turned out to be a whirlwind of activities, meetings, presentations, interviews, and personal interactions. I will try to encapsulate the events of our trip day by day to share the facts and offer a summary of this two - week trip. 08/15/2011 Monday We met with Dr. Vasyl Savchyn, the physician with whom UNWLA and Doctors Collaborating to Help Children (Dr. Gennadiy Fuzaylov) have been actively working to upgrade the pediatric burn care at Hospital #8 in Lvi v, Ukraine. (Please see our website for the formal announcement - The UNWLA and DCtoHC announced their collaboration to upgrade the quality of care of pediatric burn victims at Hospital #8 in Lviv, Ukraine and the immediate geographic region. This will be accomplished by providing the unit with additional medical equipment and supplies and by raising the physicians’ level of current burn care continuing education and latest methodology – in order to better serve these patients.) Dr. Savchyn gave us an in - de pth tour of the unit and pointed out the equipment UNWLA has purchased thus far from the UNWLA Mary Beck Fund. The equipment includes an autoclave (sterilizing machine) and appropriate accessories, a stainless steel operating table, as well as accompanying surgical lamps. The physical condition of the unit is not nearly on a par with American standards, but Dr. Savchyn and his team have achieved remarkable results nevertheless. In addition, Dr. Savchyn supplemented the report of Dr. Fuzaylov regarding the v ery first Shriners International - sponsored Outreach Clinic in Eastern Europe, which was held at this hospital in Lviv in June 2011. (During the Outreach Clinic, twenty - two patients, including four Shriners patients, were examined, and surgeries were perfor med on five young burn victims on June 21 st and 22 nd with the Ukrainian team, including Dr. Savchyn. These patients were followed in the hospital until their discharge, except for one child, who is still under Dr. Savchyn’s care. Three lectures on burn car e were given in Lviv. Surgical and anesthesia supplies ($5,000 value) were donated to the Burn Unit in Lviv. ) The team met with Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyy, who voiced his strong support of the UNWLA/DCtoHC collaboration and the medical/educational mission. UNWLA was proud to fund this first Shriners’ Outreach Clinic. It was very rewarding to meet Dr. Savchyn and his staff. This collaboration is a long - term project. Dr. Savchyn has been invited, issued a visa, and is travelling to Boston during Sept 14 – 27 i n order to observe new burn care techniques. He is also scheduled to give a visiting lecture at Harvard Medical College. These arrangements have been made by Dr. Gennadiy Fuzaylov of Massachusetts General/Harvard Medical College and the President of DCtoHC . On the initiative and involvement of the UNWLA, the Ukrainian
