32 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 2010 AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION by Ihor Magun, MD, FACP A word that has taken center stage in the medical profession is “Prevention.” The primary goal behind this word is t wofold — improving the quality of life and prolonging life. By applying certain simple preventive changes in health man - agement, a substantial impact can be made in de - creasing the prevalence of disease and supporting these two goals. Adopting some of the fo llowing preventive habits is a good place to begin. Wounds. Most simple cuts and scrapes heal well after washing with soap and water. A new approach is to apply simple white petrolatum. This type of dressing provides a moist environment and ac - celerates w ound healing by fifty percent. Wounds should obviously be covered by a bandage. Glaucoma . Primary open - angle glaucoma is an insidious, progressive optic neuropathy associated with an elevated intraocular pressure. M any Inexpensive products are available at your local drug store , and m any stores will be happy to l et you try a product before buying. Find products with the word “moisturizer” on the label.
