CENTRAL NY REGIONAL COUNCIL CONVENTIONS, ELECTIONS, AND CONTINUITY Participating actively in a UNWLA Con vention instills pride, establishes a feeling of sister hood, and fires up inspiration. Meeting a woman from across the country for the very first time and discovering that she works towards the very same goals as you do and shares your dedication to the very same causes of our organization reinforces all three of these. An immediate bond is formed, one that you can't easily explain to any of your non- Ukrainian friends. At times, it is even a challenge to explain to a non-Soyuzianka! For those hosting a UNWLA Convention, the pride, sisterhood, and inspiration are magni fied— something the committee members of Central NY Regional discovered from the day we started preparing for the XXVII UNWLA Convention, which was held in May 2005 in Albany, NY. The bonds among committees and individual committee members were formed quickly; working under pres sure to meet deadlines and satisfy commitments does that to people. Central NY is a small Regional Council, so the efforts and work in preparation for the Conven tion were quite intense. The total number of Com mittee Chairs and members was 15 and included members of Branches 95, 99, and 34! Undaunted, each volunteer worked at a professional level, con sistently and constantly working toward the goal. We experienced and overcame stress and crises and then enjoyed the feeling that we had accomplished something extremely fulfilling and rewarding. The longer-term effects have been even more gratifying: a continuity of the bonding process from which we emerged stronger and better. On November 20, 2005, the annual meeting and elections of the Central New York Regional Council took place in the parish hall of St Nicholas Church in Watervliet, NY. Branch 99 of Watervliet graciously hosted the meeting; the nominating committee had been at work since September, trying to come up with a team of people who could work together and ensure that this small Regional Council remains vibrant. After many phone calls and discus sions, the nominating committee announced that ALL of the nominees were Convention volunteers! Those few volunteers unable to commit to taking office at the time promised to help anyway they could until they were able to assume formal titles and responsibilities. And so, those elected officials changed hats and convention roles were replaced by Regional Council roles: Luba Kushnir, who served as Con vention Banquet Chair, was elected president of the Central NY Regional Council. Convention Program Chair Christine Kyfor and Irene Myron, a volunteer who worked on almost all the convention commit tees, were chosen as vice presidents. Convention press secretary Alisa Serdiuk remains as one of the two Regional Council secretaries; the other is Diana Byron, who participated in the convention and per formed during the UNWLA's 80th anniversary din ner. Convention treasurer Olya Drozdowycz now serves as Regional Council treasurer; Natalia Verzole, who performed at a convention luncheon, continues as Education Chair. Stefa Hawryluk and Ulana Hajdar, both of whom worked on the conven tion's registration committee, now head the Central New York Regional Council's Social Welfare Committee and Museum/Art Committee respect ively. Congratulations to all the officers! May your work on the Regional Council level exceed all expectations! Marianna Zajac Vice President, Public Relations XXVII Convention Chairperson
