OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National W om en’s League o f America Vol. LXIII FEBRUARY 2006 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO From the Desk of the President In this month's issue of Our Life , you will find a number of interesting articles and stories, some from new authors and others from authors whose names have become familiar to you over the years. This month's issue, however, also inaugurates a new venture, one that we present with pride and an appeal for your support. After due deliberation and consultation with our tax advisors, the UNWLA Executive Committee has recently voted to publish paid announcements, greetings, and advertisements in Our Life. This decision was made in full accordance with all rules and regulations applicable to the UNWLA's IRS 501 (c) 3 designation as a nonprofit organization. More important than the "what" and "how" of the UNWLA's decision is the "why"—the underlying purpose of this decision and what we hope it will accomplish. Publications such as ours play a major role in organizational life; they are a unifying instrument that helps to disseminate information and helps an organiza tion to develop its programs, find new membership, and share successes. In the past decade, the UNWLA, like many other organizations and institutions, has found that publication is a costly endeavor and that sustaining it requires cost-cutting measures, fundraising, and new approaches. It was with this in mind, that our decision to solicit paid advertising and announcements was made. In some ways, it was a decision that was long overdue. As you know, Our Life has a long and rich history that officially began in January 1944. We are thus embarking on the 62nd year of continuous publication of a magazine that has served our organization and the community beyond as a source of valuable information and as a link to our heritage. What some readers may not be aware of is that Our Life made an earlier, though short-lived debut some eleven years prior to this official date. The UNWLA's first magazine appeared in 1933, a year during which the United States of America was suffering the economic turmoil of the Great Depression and Ukraine was suffering from the devastation of the Great Famine. Published under the direction of Mary V. Beck, this early magazine survived only one year. But during that year, the magazine played a major role: informing readers about the Famine, the UNWLA's participation in The World’s Fair in Chicago, and the first Ukrainian Youth Congress, which was held in Chicago on August 16 and 17, 1933. The pages of this early magazine also underscored the depth of the commitments made by UNWLA members to the organization and to Ukraine. They documented not only historical events but the atmosphere of those events. Juxtaposed in the modest issues produced during the year, for example, were comments from then President Olena Lototska on numerous themes, ranging from the urgency related to the formation of the Committee on the Great Famine in Ukraine to the excitement of the UNWLA's work at the Ukrainian Pavilion at the World's Fair. The magazine folded because the organization could no longer afford to publish. In recent years, de spite all our efforts to contain costs, we have often wondered whether the same fate awaits Our Life. We can not allow this to happen. Our organization is headquartered in the richest country in the world. It is a generous organization whose members work diligently to support good causes and good people, and it is hoped that good people will now come to the support of the UNWLA and help us in our quest to keep Our Life financially viable. A rate schedule and a summary of production requirements and advertising policies are presented on the following page. We sincerely hope that you will support us in this endeavor.
