MOLLYOLGA — An artistic triumph! The recipients of the 1985 New York State Gover nor’s Arts Award were Molly Bethel and Olga Aleksie- wicz Lownie, creators of M O L L Y O L G A — a unique art studio in Buffalo, New York. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is free of charge to anyone who is interested in furthering his or her creative abilities. Nila Steckiw interviewed the directors of this unus ual studio and found that they are not only dedicated to art but to helping people enjoy and employ their talents. Molly Bethel, a visual artist, started this program when she opened a studio offering free instructions in visual arts to Buffalo residents. She was soon joined by Olga Aleksiewicz Lownie, and together they created M O L L Y O L G A , which today has a staff of several artists and an enrollment of some 350 students — children and adults, alike. The studio is housed in its own building and is subsidized in part by the County, the Youth Board, the New York State Council of the Arts and pri vate donations. Olga A. Lownie is a member of UNWLA and presi dent of Branch 97. In addition to putting in almost a full week at the studio, Mrs. Lownie is raising a family, sings in the church choir, accompanies the choir “Burlaky” and is always willing to lend a hand with community projects.
