O U R LIFE MONTHLY, published by Ukrainian National Women's League of America Vol. XXXII DECEMBER No. 11 Editor Marta Baczynsky CHRYSTOS RODYWSJA! With the coming Christmas Holydays sincere greetings to all Regional Councils to all Branches and to all members of Ukrainian National Women's League of America. We extend our best wishes for your success in community efforts and personal endeavors. We great our honorary President — Lidia Burachynsky. Our thoughts and sincere best wishes fly across the ocean to our homeland, to those who live in bondage, in constant fear for their lives or for the lives of their families. We pray that the Newborn Christ hear their cry, and give them freedom and happiness. We extend Christmas Greetings and Best Wishes for a Happy New Year to all members of our communities. The Executive Committee U.N.W.L.A. International Women’s Year 1975 We, the women of the United States of America, join together to challenge our Nation to complete the un finished work of achieving a free and democratic society, begun long ago by our Founding Mothers and Fathers. Join us as we commit our lives, hearts, energies and talents to the attainment of this goal. (from the Preamble to the U.S. National Women's Agenda) CHRISTMAS REFLECTIONS. Christmas. An aura of mystical, magical scents per meate the air. There is a light-headedness, an instant kinship with one and all. Feelings vary, their ranges reach dramatic highs or painful lows, depending on ones thoughts. The shining beauty of the occasion — the birth of light and hope and love — brings a serene peace to the heart, a confidence for a better tomorrow. Memories of loved ones far away evoke a desperate longing — to share a touch, exchange a word. Christmas. An antidote to our mad way of life — a sudden stop in the whirlwind cycle of everyday activities. Hush, slow down, listen. The cry of a new born infant — a miracle — a new beginning. Step out of the race for a while and listen to yourself, to your thoughts, listen to your heart. Give yourself a chance, a second chance. Christmas. In regal splendor, the tree stands proud and tall. The sparkling glittering ornaments, the cookies, the candy, lovingly caress the boughs. A paper angel holds a lonely vigil upon its crown. He is a somewhat lopsided angel, with uneven wings and a rather large head. The tiny hand clasped in mine has made him. My child gazes in wonder at the fruit of his labour, a thing of beauty in his eyes, and rightly honored in so prominent a place. I will keep that angel forever, if I may. Marta Baczynsky CHRISTMAS — A HOLYDAY OF LOVE. Christmas is coming. For many it evokes warm, yet sometimes painful, filled with longing, memories of childhood. Memories of the first star, a lighted candle on the table or in the tree, of frosty designs on the win dows, of snow sparkling in the moonlight. Within these memories is the glow of family love — gathered to gether to participate in Swjata Vecherja. It was a time of closeness, of warmth, understanding and need. For the older generation, these times of long ago are past. Therefore, while preparing for the holidays it should not be a time of total longing for what was, nor a time of complaints that things are not as they used to be. Christmas festivities should be prepared so that our children and young people will one day remember them with light and love. Let us not emphasize the fake glitter but stress family unity, understanding and love. Let us faithfully participate in our time honored, Ukrainian traditions. Let us not burden each other with quantities of gifts, but give each other gifts of joy and happiness. Let us hope there are none among us who are alone or lonely. Let our thoughts linger with those far away, who in fear or sadness look for the first star — those in prisons or in exile. Memories of Christmas — where our feeling of love reached out to others — will always remain a treasure and strength in life.
