“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, СІЧЕНЬ 2018 WWW. UNWLA .ORG 25 Ariadna Terletskyj In 2017, UNWLA Branch 111 had to say goodbye to our long - time member Ara Terletskyj. Ara was one of the initiators of the renewal of our UNWLA branch in Southern California and later held the office of branch president for several years. It was not until the onset of illness in later life that Ara was forced to curtail her active participation in Ukrainian community af- fairs. Her dau ghter, Roxolana Vecherek, has very kindly provided us with a short biography of her mother . Branch 111 president, Luda Wussek. Ariadna (Ara) Oksana Kamenetsky was born in Rohatyn, Ukraine , on Feb- ruary 22, 1929. She lived in Rohatyn with her parents, Ju lian and Natalia Kamenetsky, and two brothers, Ihor and Leonid (Levko), until moving in 1941 to Ivano - Frankivsk. Thereafter , in 1944, the family moved several times as a result of World War II , first to the Carpathian Mountain region, then again to Salzb u r g and a small municipality in Austria called Vock- lamarkt. In 1949, Ariadna and her family, came to the United States and settled in Chicago, where she attended n ursing s chool at Henrotin Hospital. In 1957 Ariadna married Jaroslav Terleckyj , and the new- lywe ds moved to New York where their two children, Roksolana and Oleh, were born. Ariadna had many wonderful friends in New York . She was active in PLAST and in the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America. The family enjoyed many weekends and vacations a t the Ukrainian r esort of Soyuzivka in the Catskills Mountains. In 1970, the y moved to Elmhurst, Illinois (near Chicago) , where Ariadna became reacquainted with long - time friends and was active with them in the Chicago U N- WLA. A few years later, the family relocated to Los Angeles. Ariadna was happy to be closer to her parents and her brother Levko and his family, who lived in Stockton , California. Ariadna worked as a corporate nurse for Hughes Aircraft Co. and maintained her Ukrainian ties in the Los Angel es area. She was a parishioner at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hollywood and became a member of the Los Angeles branch of the UNWLA , serving as branch president from 2006 to 2008. Jaroslav Terleckyj passed away in 19 93, but Ariadna remained in California near her daughter and family until succumbing to Alzheimer’s disease. Ariadna Terleckyj passed away on March 23, 2017. She was well loved, lived a productive, happy life , and always brought laughter to those around h er.
