In Memoriam Miami Mourns Community A ctivist Dr. Irena Dzubinsky by Oksana Piaseckyj, Cultural Affairs Chair, Branch 17 As we prepar e for the holidays and our beautiful Ukrainian Christmas tra- ditions, the members of Branch 17 of the Ukrainian Women’s League of America remember the special years that Dr. Irena Dzubinsky was with us. She was the inspiration behind many Ukrainian traditions and cus- toms that came to life in the Miami Ukrainian community. Unfortunately, Irena’s enthusiastic, creative energy , which enhanced the cultural life of the community , came to a sudden and unexpected end on March 17 , 2017. Her death was deeply felt by the south Florida community. Dr. Irena Dzubinsky, came to Florida from her birthplace in Lviv, Ukraine, over 20 years ago . She soon became involved in the Ukrainian Catholic Church and the UNWLA in Miami. For many years , she served as president of UNWLA Branch 17 . Her devotion to her church and to our UNWLA branch was enhanced by her love for the arts. It was my pleasure to initiate with her our amateur theat er group in Miami. We put together at least ten programs a year on va rious themes: religious, political and cultural. Among the many programs were tributes to Ukrainian heroines, Taras Shevchenko, Metropolitan Andrij Sheptytskyj, and political heroes of the past and present. Irena , with her rich cultural knowledge and cre- at ive abilities , composed all the scenarios. Creating so many different programs, required a deep commitment and love for the subject mat- ter , and Irena exemplified this with her deep appreciation for her homeland and Ukrainian culture. Work- ing w ith the th eat er group , Irena presented a variety of plays which she wrote herself : Hutzul Wedding , Ivan Kupalo , Evening in Lviv Retro , and Ukrainian Rituals of Bread . Irena also enriched our lives in other ways by inviting guests from Ukraine: b andur a players, poets , painters, writers and soloists. A ll brought with them a bit of Ukraine . Irena was also supportive of all the local talent and strived to showcase local artists whenever she could. To honor our UNWLA member Tamara Huryn for her embroidery and gerdan - m aking skills, Irena organized a fashion show that was on par with professional presentation s . She enjoyed the singing of our “Trio Maksymowich” so much, that she decided to or- ganize for them their first trip to Ukraine and even ar- ranged for them to give se veral concerts in major cities where they were greeted with resounding applause and even warmly greeted by famous Ukrainian singer Nina Matvienko . Dr. Irena Dzubinsky with her gifts and love left us many beautiful memories. May she rest in peace knowing that many loved her and miss her!
