“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ТРАВЕНЬ 2017 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 17 With Fond Memories: Reflections on a 29-year Journey with the UNWLA Scholarship Program by Luba Bilowchtchuk Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine (2001). Oryna Sokulska (second left), Luba Bilowtchuk, and M. Ory- sia Jacus flanked by stu- dents and guests Congratulations to the UNWLA Scholarship Program on celebra- ting its 50th anniver- sary. Fifty years! What a great milestone this is! But as I reflect on this achievement, I doubt that any of the individuals who were involved from the modest start of the Scholarship Program could have predicted its tremendous growth. All of those who have worked to make the program a suc- cess over the past five decades are to be heartily congratulated. My first introduction to the UNWLA Scholarship Program was in 1988 when Anna Krawczuk, Chair of the Scholarship Program at that time, asked me to become the administrator of the scholarship office, which was then located in her home. At that time, the focus of the program was helping Ukrainian students in Poland and Brazil. It was in 1988 that Program administrators awarded 1,000 scholarships, a number that happened to coincide with the Millennium of Christianity in Ukraine. It was during this time that I began to realize the enormous dedication and incredible professionalism of the volunteers and leaders of the program. Five years later (1993), I was elected Scholarship Program Chairwoman. My predecessors, Maria Chymynec, Teodozia Sawycka, and Anna Krawczuk had already laid the groundwork and paved the way for the subsequent success and expansion of the program. Their dedication, profes- sionalism, and the loving care with which the Scholarship Program (SP) chairs and committee members ran this enterprise was a testament to its success and development. It was an awesome responsibility to “fill the shoes” of these remarkable women. As the newly elected chair of the Scholarship Program, I was determined to continue the crucial work of my predecessors. I was very fortunate to have the dedicated support of the SP committee, a group of professional women who volunteered many hours of their time and expertise to ensure a clear and organized approach to program operations. The committee comprised Anna Krawczuk, M. Orysia Jacus, Maria Polanskyj, Odarka Polanskyj Stockert, Maria Pazuniak, Christina Izak, Olga Trytyak, and Victoria Mischenko, who served as our office administrator. To this day I am very thankful to these committee members for their commitment to the SP, thus ensuring its successful continuation and ex- pansion. I assumed the responsibilities of the UNWLA Scholarship Program Chair in 1993. This was two years after Ukraine declared its independence from the Soviet Union. It was also the year the UNWLA began to develop the Scholarship Program in Ukraine. To assess the further needs of the program, I trav- eled to Ukraine multiple times together with the Scholarship Program’s Treasurer M. Orysia Jacus. Our goal was to establish more contacts, meet with scholarship recipients, and assure proper coordination and direction of our program activity. During our visit to Ukraine, we met with Soyuz Ukrainok Ukraine
