14 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ТРАВЕНЬ 2017 Thirty years ago, UNWLA President Ivanna Rozhankowsky’s message in the commemorative book of the XXI UNWLA Convention was “The women who have been fortunate enough to live in a democratic and free state are obligated but yet privileged to continue the ideals and traditions of the Ukrainian women’s movement.” Since then, the UNWLA’s mission and ideology have re- mained steadfast, but our plans and projects have been periodically retailored to suit current times and current needs. One constant is that the UN- WLA has always believed that we can help Ukraine, one project at a time. This year’s “Cha- ritable Ukraine” award, bestowed upon the UN- WLA, is an acknowledgement of every UNWLA member’s dedication and commitment. (Please see page 3) On Sunday, April 9, the New Jersey Re- gional Council hosted an informal meeting with well-known author, activist, and radio host from Dnipro, Ukraine, Fidel Sukhonis. Mr. Sukhonis is editor in chief of the magazine Borysten (an inde- pendent monthly magazine established in July 1991), which is a vehicle for the Ukrainian na- tional spirit and provides a wealth of information on Ukrainian culture. In the January 2017 issue, editor in chief Sukhonis requested information about the UNWLA, and an article about our or- ganization’s background and current projects and work was subsequently published. Once contact with Mr. Sukhonis was established, the UNWLA Executive Board voted unanimously to support the publication of a collection of articles about the volunteers aiding those fighting in or affected by the war in Eastern Ukraine. This collection was compiled into a book entitled Mobilized by the Heart . One chapter describes the UNWLA’s con- tributions; another focuses on Branch 137’s exten- sive humanitarian aid efforts. As in the “Charita- ble Ukraine” competition, the spotlight is on vol- unteerism, within Ukraine and from abroad. As a man with many interests and talents, Mr. Sukho- nis was very interesting and we hope to continue our communications. New Jersey Regional Council meeting with Fidel Sukhonis The World Information Transfer’s (WIT) Founder is UNWLA Honorary Member, Dr. Christine K. Durbak. WIT’s 26 th International Conference was held on April 13, 2017, at the United Nations and was co-sponsored by the UN Mission of Ukraine and the UN Division for Sus- tainable Development. The topic addressed this year was “Health and Environment—the Oceans and us.” WIT’s mission is to promote scientific facts regarding the relationship between human health and environmental contamination. The nuclear accident at Chornobyl epitomizes this in- terrelationship and has been discussed at these annual conferences since WIT’s founding. This year an extensive report was read about the con- tamination of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, which is geographically designated a shallow bay of the Black Sea. Unfortunately, due to the cur- rent political crisis in the region, any and all envi- ronmental issues have been pushed aside and preempted by military concerns. After the presen- tations on the conditions of several other bodies of water were read, the emphatic conclusion was that the health of the ocean can and does contrib- ute to human health, especially the health of peo- ple living in any coastal area. One strength of these conferences is that Dr. Durbak invites high school students to attend and learn from profes- sionals in the field. Engaging our young adults is vital, and we congratulate Dr. Durbak for her vi- sion. Wishing our Mothers and Grandmothers a beautiful Mother’s Day filled with family, love and laughter. May God’s blessings grace them with good health and much happiness !
