16 WWW. UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 2013 session at the United Nations from the 4th to the 15th. The priority theme of this 57th session is the “Elimination and prevention of all forms of vi o- lence against women and girls.” Several members of the Board will be participating in the CSW f o- rum as well as its side panels, and we look fo r- ward to upd ating our readers on the results of these sessions in the April issue of Our Life. May you find the renewal of hope, health, love and the spirit of God. Happy Easter to you and your families! On February 15, 2013, the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv conferred the title of Doctor Honoris Causa on Honorary UNWLA Member, Dr. Martha Bohachevsky - Chomiak . The UNWLA National Board proudly congratulates Dr. Bohachevsky - Chomiak! Dr. Martha Bohachevsky - Chomiak receives an honorary doctor ate from the Ukrainian Catholic Uni versity in Lviv. L - R: Prof. Yaroslav Hrytsak, Dr. Martha Bohachevsky - Chomiak, Jeffrey Wills, and Bishop Borys Gudziak OURDOCTORATE The old Feast Day of Visit a- tion — when the Virgin went to meet her cousin Elizabeth and the Baby Jesus stirred in her womb — in Ukrainian folklore used to serve as a marker for predicting when spring would come. Winter and Spring met on Visitation, that day determining which of the sea sons is winning. Today, in the media culture in Ukraine a badger in Kharkiv serves that function, and even our Pennsylvanian groundhog gets more coverage than this Feast D ay. On the other hand, St. Valentine, a part of whose holy relics rest in picturesqu e but slightly tatty Sambir, gained almost as much public recognition among the non - religious Ukrainian population as Christmas and Easter . Ma ybe this was one of the reasons that the Ukrainian Catholic University chose the Feast D ay of Visitation, Februa ry 15, as their Faculty Day. Faculty Day is wh at it says it is: students are off fo r the Feast Day, and the faculty gather to an a- lyze their work, the departments introduce new hires, new business is discussed, and whatever formal documents need be signed are signed. This year the event was more public. Bishop Borys Gudziak, the outgoing Rector, who now has taken on the post of President, as the Ordinary for Ukrainian Catholics in France, the Netherlands and Belgium, now resides in Paris. The celebr ation of the Liturgy in the new ly decorated University Chapel was therefore a particularly festive occasion . The golden vestments of the assisting clergy challenged the gray damp of Lviv winter . The congregation, led by a quintet of robust clerics, tried to sing away the freezing pellets that f ell on the icy pot - holes as if farina falling from the sky. For me it was also a very special morning. I had just finished a series of lectures under the ausp i- ces of the UNWLA Lecturesh ip in Women’s Studies. Stud ent and community interest in the topics was palpable; even som e faculty showed up to listen — a minor miracle in our profession. Recognition of this interest was very gratifying, especially since I had nothing to do with the actual set - up of this program. B ishop Borys thanked us for our support. That afternoon UCU conferred its second honorary doctorate. The first honorary doctor of UCU, two years ago, was Bishop Vasyl Velychkovsky, the last metropolitan of the Ukrainian Catacomb Church. Mine was the sec ond one. I accepted it on behalf of all of us who through the years combined our careers with community work, who tried to foster academic freedom, who sought to actively live the principles of our faith and did not lose ourselves in the process. And, yes, I had tears in my eyes. And plain old gratitude in my heart. Martha Bohachevsky - Chomiak , Doctor Honoris Causa , Ukrainian Catholic University
