UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 2013 2013 UNWLA ANNUAL BOARD MEETING: FORGING THE FUTURE by Lidia Bilous, 4th Vice - President for Public Relations The Annual UNWLA Board Meeting was held on February 1 - 3, 2013 , at the organization's New York Headquarters. The meeting was convened by UNWLA P resident Marianna Zajac , who welcomed ever y- one and gave a short review of the events of the past year. The annual reports reflected the diverse programs of the Branches , which support the co n- tinuing projects of the UNWLA , including : Partnership with Doctors C ollaborati ng to Help Children and Shriner s Hospital Financial aid to the pediatric burn unit at Hospital No.8 in Lviv Support of nursing homes in Ukraine by su p- plying w heel chair s, bedding, etc. Finan cial aid to Babusi ( elderly women ) Financial and other aid to orphans and o r- phanages Scholarships for continuing education to st u- dents in Ukraine and in the diaspora Continuing active and financial support of the Ukrainian Museum in New York A ctive membership in the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations Continuing efforts to increase and diversify the UNWLA membership The ma in theme of the meet ing emph a- siz ed in the reports and their discussion was the future of our organization. Everyone ag reed that we need to be forward - thinking and form a str a- tegic plan to serve as the blueprint guide in our work. From the reports of Roxolana Yarymovych and Oksana Dats, the future is here; the membe r- ship - at - large roster is growing and two new Bran ches have formed in New Jersey. Anna Macielinski is planning new branches which she has named “ Cyber Branches. ” We are also co n- necting in the Digital Age. In the co mpetitive world of publications, we have taken great strides to deliver our magazine in multiple formats to meet the diverse needs of our members. Our Life is now available on line in a digitized format. The platforms on which we are commun i- cating our mess age are ever - changing. 2012 saw further use and development of our official we b- site by Web Master Zorian a Haftkowycz. Online social communities may be in our future. Our future also depends on our financial growth. Treasurer Roma Shuhan rem inded the Board that the UNWLA is facing financial hurdles due to the economic situation in the worl d. We must count on timely, 100% payment of Branch and Regional Council dues as well as look into other sources of income. The UNWLA is grateful for any financial sup port now and in the future. The most visible new project in 2012 was the forming of an Endowment Fund by the UNWLA for a Lectureship i n Women’s Studies at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv. Th e successful fund raising for this project showcased the incredible dedication of our members to the education of Ukrainian women leaders. The UNWLA has engaged Dr. Mart h a Kebalo to write the history of our organization in English. Dr. Kebalo was invited to speak to the board and shared her conception of the bo ok and the pr o- gress made thus far . As Lidia Bilous reported, the UNWLA r e- mains committed to the advocacy of human rights in Ukraine as well as legal due process. Such a c- ti v ities as submitting letters to leaders in Ukraine and the United States and speakin g to community groups regarding past and present events in Ukrain e , such as the disregard for the legal rights of Yulia Tymoshenko and Yuriy Lutsenko , can help bring about change . As awareness spreads, advocacy strengthens. In her closing remarks , UNWLA P resident Marianna Zajac noted that only together, as the diverse and powerful group of Ukrainian women dedicated to our organization , will we be succes s- ful. There is a remarkable reservoir of expertise and passion that resides in the hearts and min ds of those in our organization and can make a big difference . We are looking into a future of challenges. Let us look back and examine our organization’s history — a history filled with dedication and hard work for the protection and preservation of our Ukrainia n heritage, even in times of hardship — and apply these lessons to an unknown, exciting future. Let us treasure our organization , which brings together Ukrainian women from various professions, walks of life, generations and imm i- grati on waves, who are ready to volunteer their talents t o carry out the mission and goals of the UNWLA.
