16 WWW. UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛЮТИЙ 2013 In the meantime, on January 16th, the Minister for Education, Science, Youth and Sports of Ukraine, Dmitriy Tabachnik , announced a n a- tionwide student competition of the Russian la n- guage, “ Lukomorye,” for students of the second through eleventh grades. The official competition document is posted on the website of the Verkhovna Rada . The document states that the “ contest will be held to promote language skills among students , enhance and maintain the Ru s- sian language in schools , increase the know ledge of the Russian language , develop research abil i- ties of students, and to support and improve the effectiveness of teachers of the Russian language.” So much for non - governmental organ iza tions (Ukrainian Saturday schools) and gov ern ments (Ukraine itself) celebrating the Inter national Mother Language Day! Dr. Andrew Sorokowski, a lawyer and hi s- torian who currently conducts research at the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, DC, p u b- lished a thought - provoking article about the Women’s Studies Lectureship at the Ukrainian Catholic University in The Ukrainian Weekly , dated January 6th, 2013. To quote Dr. Soro kow - ski, “...there is more to women’s studies than fe m- inism. It is by nature interdisciplinary, integrating history, politics, sociology, economics, culture, philosophy, theology, and much more. Why is it important for this field to be represented at UCU? (...) the other universities that Ukrainians attend, like the Central Euro pean University, have long offered women’s or gender studies. (...) Women’s studies will enable UCU to enter the scholarly discussion of women’s and gender i s- sues (...) [and] eventually to propose an altern a- tive, Christian vision of a society where women h ave their just and proper role.” In his article, Dr. Sorokowski refers to the UNWLA endowment funding and sponsorship of the Lectureship and quotes the central goal we articulated for this pr o- ject: “[the] overall and vital objective is to help women achieve a higher level of equality, respect and influence by enhancing their important role in the social, economic, educational and political settings.” Thank you for your scholarly approach and your support of the UNWLA Women’s Stu d- ies Lectureship at UCU , Dr. Sorokowski! As an update, the spring semester of the Lectureship will be taught by Dr. Martha Bohachevsky - Chomiak and will focus on the historical research of Dr. Bohachevsky - Chomiak’s Duma Ukrainy — zhinocho rodu . We thank Dr. Chomiak for her integr al participation in the Lectureship as we move forward with this important project.
