36 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2011 SUPER SKIN by Ihor Magun, MD, FACP Skin is t he largest organ in y our body . It serves as a barrier, similar to a wall , against dust and dirt and other things you don’t want disrupting what’s behind it. But like walls, skin is susceptible to damage from the elements. W ind and water , for example, can sculpt moun tains and can even erode rocky coastlines, and exposure to these elements can affect and profound ly changes the texture and appearance of skin. Skin needs special care to keep it looking its best and functioning as it should. A simple medical overview of skin can help you u nderstand some concepts in skin management . Skin contains glands that normally produce an oil , which forms a thin film that covers skin surface. Dirt and other particles adhere to th is oily film. Soap is a dispersing agent that breaks do wn the oils into small particles ; it also removes the oil , and this leads to dry skin. Too much soap and too long exposure to soap is detrimental to skin. A simple experiment can show you exactly what happens. Using a magnifying glass, l ook closely at the back of your hand , noting the groves and flat surfaces. Then wet your hand wi th water and apply soap, leaving it on for three minutes. Rinse and look at the skin again , paying close attention to the areas you looked at before. You will notice an obvious di fference in the appearance of the skin on that hand. This by no means suggests that you should forego washing your skin with soap and water. It simply means adopting a common sense approach to skin care that allows for cleanliness without drying skin out. The following skin management routine is recommended for keeping skin clean, healthy, and attractive. Bar soaps should only be used from the neck down. Choose soap that moisturizes, apply sparingly, and rinse off quickly. Use a proper makeup remover. I f you have dry skin, apply cold cream and wipe off the makeup. Start with water — warm water to loosen dirt, followed by a dime - sized amount of cleanser (this should contain ultra - nourishing moistu - rizers such as almond oil), then rinse with cool or lukewarm water . Exfoliate your face once a week. Micro der m - abrasion kits are available in all drugstores. They are easy to use and are not expensive. Most kits last for weeks. Exfoliation keeps your skin glowing year round. Moisturizers seal moisture into the s kin. Look for a moisturizer that lists glycerin as the main ingredient, and moisturize your skin even if it is oily. Do not over apply moisturizer because it can lead to clogged pores. (Skip this step if your skin is prone to acne.) The number one cause o f wrinkles is sun damage, so sunscreen protection (year round) is paramount. Look for an SPF of 30, and use as a daily moisturizer. Don’t use SPF products at night — they are meant to be used during the day, not round the clock. The skin under the eyes is extremely thin and also benefits from moisturizing creams. There are specific eye creams that have a roller - ball application mechanism. These are fine, your regular moisturizing lotion is probably just as effective. Some companies claim that their products not only moisturize but also decrease the “baggy” look. If it works for you, use it. Over - the - counter retinoid creams can help diminish wrinkle lines when regularly applied. Prescription retinoid products are better and are frequently used in conjunction with moistu - rizers. On a final note, remember that all these methods are not helpful if you do not address what’s inside the skin. Adequate sleep, good nutrition, exercise, and plenty of smiles are also im - portant. And when you realize how easy it is to keep skin looking good, you’ll have plenty to smile about. “Write a sentence about a public servant,” said a teacher. The small boy wrote: “The fireman came down the ladder pregnant.” The teacher took the lad aside to correct him. “Don't you know wh at pregnant means?” she asked. “Sure,” said the young boy confiden tly. “It means carrying a child.” Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
