On April 26 - 27, the 20th International C onference on Health and Environment was held at United Nations Headquarters in New York City. Coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the nuclear accident of Chornobyl, this conference was organized by Dr. Christine Durbak of the World Information Transfer and co - sponsored by the government of Ukraine and the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN, Yuriy Sergeyev. The first day’s speakers included permanent representatives of several countries, including Japan, which has recently suffered its own nuc lear disaster. Several Ukrainian organizations were also invited to participate: the Ukrainian World Congress (Eugene Czolij, president), the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations (Maria Szkambara, president), the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (Tamara Gallo Olexy, president), U.S. Ukraine Foundation (Nadia McConnell, president), and the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America. The title of my presentation was “How the Nuclear Tragedy of Chornobyl and the UNWLA Intersect,” and I offered, in a snapshot format, our organization’s many years of continued concern and efforts to help the victims of Chornobyl.
