“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2011 25 human rights, free speech , and free press, especially now when Ukraine finds itself at a decisive cross - roads in its history. The UNWLA president touch ed on t he achievements of the UNWLA under her presidency, including the upgrades and changes to the UNWLA website, which makes UNWLA news and related information easily accessible to every member. She also applauded the many contributions made by members of Branc h 56 in the past twenty years , underscoring that w e are strong supporters of The Ukrainian Museum in New York City, the UNWLA’s monthly magazine Our Life , and student scholarships and charitable funding for the elderly and needy in Ukraine. Likewise , she o bserved, our branch members a re diligent in spreading informa - tion about Ukraine through cultural and scholarly events in southwest Florida and enlighten the public on issues such as the Holodomor and the Chornobyl nuclear disaster in local classrooms. She also noted the growth of our branch membership — starting with 18 members, the Milena Rudnycky branch in North Port now has 98. It is the largest UNWLA branch and has donated approximately $150,000 to various UNWLA causes . Following the UNWLA president’s s peech, Oksana Lew presented her with a check for $2 , 000 , a gift from the Milena Rudnycky Branch to be delivered to The Ukrainian Museum on the occasion of its 35 th anniversary celebration. Marianna Zajac then presented Branch 56 with a certificate of appre ciation . The program continued with Maria Nawa - rynsky presenting an overview of the beginnings of our branch ; Tania Silecky speaking of our patroness, Milena Rudnycky ; and Roxolana Yarymovych outlining our branch’s specific achievements. Roma Steckiw Long then entertained the guests with a medley of Ukrainian melodies on the bandura . T he quartet Mria, comprising Olha Pasternak, Maria Kowalsky, Nadia Lobur , and Zoia Fylypowych, and accompanied by Orest Lazor, also performed several songs. Anniversary commit tee chair Romana Guran thanked all attendees and closed the festivities. Roma Steckiw Long performs medley of Ukrainian melodies . Branch 56 continued its 20 - year anniversary commemorative events on March 29, when members gathered at a special meeting held at St. Mary’s Parish Hall to hear UNWLA President Marianna Zajac speak in greater detail of the importance of our organization and its work . S he answered numerous questions , acknowledged com - ments from the floor , and thanked everyone for a beautiful a nd successful anniversary celebration . Following the meeting, everyone relaxed, enjoyed refreshments , and chatted amiably with each other and with Ms. Zajac.
